Need help with flash video

Post by Goldknight »

Hello everyone. I'm stumped on something that I'm thinking of doing on my website. Because hotlinking to my music videos was such a problem in the past I wanted to come up with a way for people to view the videos without being able to hotlink. Though I know my host has hotlinking security if I activate that then any images that I use on my site for other sites come up blank. So that's out. I considered using photobucket to host them, but the problem there is when they upload the audio is slightly off from the video. So now I thought maybe doing a flash video on the page similar to this site:
http://ellen.warnerbros.com/galleries/videos/

Now I'm not sure where to begin with this and if it's the right idea to do. I know some people don't have flash however I don't know of any other method of doing this. I like that at this site you have the screen with the play/stop button options. I believe then it's impossible to hotlink. Am I wrong? If someone can walk me through the steps on doing this I'd really appreciate it. :bow :bow :bow

Hotlinking....

..as in copying the URL and just pasting it on some other site? You can do that with a flash file just as easily as you can with a video file. All they have to do is copy the flash code and .swf and paste it somewhere.

Why don't you just youtube 'em and copy each individual one into the site. The player will be flash, it will be on youtube and they can't hotlink it because it's not technically taking bandwidth from your site.

That's my best advice.
Making a flash video PLAYER in flash from scratch is hard.
Making a video in flash is easy.

I figured out the making of the video in flash...just not the player. The hotlinking I realize anyone can link to the page. The problem was there were many many sites that were directly linking to the video itself. I'm tempted to edit it out from .wmv format to mpeg and then see if photobucket works any better with the audio. As for right now they are obviously beginner videos with crappy editing. I don't plan to change them anytime soon, but really want the photobucket idea to work. I like the YouTube idea tube. I've never used YouTube though so I'll need to look into that. Thanks for the advice BO! I really appreciate it. :)
