Because I am DONE :)

And here is the requisite overexposed shot of the exhausted graduate in the ungodly unflattering monkey suit ;) with children squeezing all the breath out of her. They just don't make mortarboards to look good on anyone :P I told the dean (the one I work for, that is) that he had an advantage over me... no hat-hair! (He's basically bald. Love to tease him about that. He blushes so prettily :P )

You have JWR to blame for having this inflicted upon you, btw. :D

This was from last night. Nothing like racing through the week from Hades and then having to drag yourself back out on Friday night. At least, being the mid-year graduation, the ceremony was mercifully short ! :D

My only "oops" was that when the President (whose name also is Kay :P ) called for the candidates for the Master's degree in arts & sciences, education and social sciences (something like that... those of us with the white trim on our hoods) to come forward to receive our diplomas, it took me a second to twig. Lady beside me was going to go apoplectic if I didn't stand and move out. I'm so used to doing the faculty side of this whole business that I forgot I was one of the students! :crackup

And now... I had better get cracking on Christmas mail-outs! :)

You may or may not know that I've been pursuing a doctorate since 2000. After limping to the finish line of my last class eight months ago, I took a deep breath, looked at where I was, what an awful state my health (physical AND mental) had gotten into, and how many other things I wanted to do with my time aside from write a dissertation.

And decided to bag it. :) The deciding factors were that I loved my topic too much to write a dissertation on it, because that level of over-exposure and constant criticism can lead you to hate it. (My spouse hasn't touched "transactional distance" since he got his done). The other factor was having both the Spouzal Unit and the Physician Unit give me variations of "if you don't do somethinig about the stress you're going to be dead in five years."

However, I am too stubborn to just walk away. ;) (Surprised? I think not!) We did some wrangling and finagling with the Poombah of Bean-Counting at the graduate school, and were able to figure out a way to convert my 80+ hours of credit work into a 30 credit hour masters.

I did still have to take the comprehensive exams, though, just so they could torture me a little more ;).

It's been a couple of the most stress-laden, hideous weeks in recent memory, but I turned in the take-home portion of the exam yesterday!
:woot: Sixteen pages of gloriously-composed egregious trash! (They only wanted six... but the questions they gave me could have entire monographic series written about them).

Health state: crummy.
Mental alertness: Lousy (can you say.... toast?)
Stress level: collapse.

Happiness quotient: ZOOOM!! :D :D :D

I won't know for a few weeks whether I passed, but for better or worse I am DONE!

Speaking as one who actually got a doctorate, and watched a spouse go after one unsuccessfully twice, I can honestly say that I would never consciously wish a Ph.D. on anyone who didn't truthfully feel in his or soul that it was necessary. I spent as many years after I got my doctorate in post-doc work learning real-world skills that made me (minimally) employable, as I spent getting the darn thing in the first place. (Six years and six years ... the prime of my life, such as it was ...)

On the other hand, the kind of work that you've done surely deserves both recognition and the little "M.A." stickie star to put on your lunch box, regardless of the mindless, obnoxious series of loop-jumps they make you go through before they give you what you already earned. I hope that it does come through without a hitch.

If not, you are Master Baakay in our minds, now and for some time past.

Sounds like a wonderful decision Baakay. I know you passed that little wussy little 16 page ordeal. Now sit back, have some tea and start psychoanalyzing all your loved ones! :D

Oh, but I do that anyway. :P

Actually, the master's is in educational technology/instructional design, not psych, so....

Anyway! Two Master's degrees and $2.50 will get me a cup of Seattle's Best at our snack bar over yonder. Gotta love it. :D

Congrats on working a deal to your benefit!

School - testing - Brrrr!

I hadn't realized just how traumatic my college years were until I went back to university 20 years later in order to take a couple of basic ecomputer programming courses. Kept waking up in the middle of the night AGAIN with the old, familiar dreams:

The grade-determining pop quiz based on the secret textbooks that I had'nt known about, the teacher lecturing in a foreign language I didn't know, and then the dreams about getting ready for class, going, and getting there late and finding out the class had been moved to a secret location....

I'm glad someone else has the same dreams I have. Except that I'm usually the teacher, and the students are speaking a foreign language, and come and go on a schedule that's different from mine, and there are secret agents in the back who have come to observe my teaching on that day.

Plus at some point I realize that I'm either in my pajamas or entirely nude.

Let us know when the degree comes through, Baakay, and we can hold an international polyglot beer bash in your honor. (In our pajamas.)

I remember doing my master's thesis. The week before it was supposed to
go for review, my professor wanted a complete rewrite or he wouldn't let it
go. And it was pretty much all style elements...the technical content was ok.

So, I spent the next week pulling ~20 hour days to get it done. I remember
one night when I was sleeping. I was dreaming that I was still working on
my thesis. I woke up and I was lying on my back with my hands in front of
me and fingers moving like I was typing.

Needless to say...I never had any desire to go back for a doctorate.
