Gallery viewing habits question

Post by Evilarrex »

It is an interesting dilemna when collecting and then creating and displaying a gallery.... when you start a series or actually intend to collect only the odd 1 or 2 cels from a particular series as to what constitutes sufficient "mass" to attract viewers to look at particular cels in your collection.
The option of listing of cel numbers on RS is both a blessing and curse. When I look at someone's gallery a scan of numbers against series will often show where a collector's main effort has gone into. However, that does mean you can also overlook gems which that collector has picked out amongst the other series they collect. I've been pretty guilty of that.
And yet I find it preferable to list even lone cels under a separate heading for the series than under a more impersonal "misc" "liqorice allsorts" section.
What does everyone else think?

I generally prefer seeing Rubberslug anime titles listed by each title even if the collector has several dozen anime titles showing. I'm not a "generalist viewer" and I rarely look through popular mainstream titles. Most miscellaneous sections (which I view all the time looking for uncommon titles) are filled with items that I'm not as interested in viewing.

Since I don't view galleries I don't know very often, "all titles being listed individually" is faster and preferred by me.

And since gallery preference comments always seem to offend several people no matter how you say it, let me just add that:

Either way a collector decides to list them is fine by me. I don't think any less of you either way you decide to do it. It's just MY personal preference. No offense is intended. :D

I like it when people seperate their cels by series because it's easier to see cels that may be hard to come by. Misc. sections have such great cels, but after putting so much effort into getting that cel, even if it's a single cel, why not give it a section of it's own?

Also, It's much easier for someone to find, say, my Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer cels in my gallery if it's separated than it is to look in the artwork section.

I completely agree, there are several galleries that I have visited that simply have amazing cels in there misc section. I always have thought that by massing them all together it kind of degrades the cel by not giving its own section.

Sections with single cels just feel sparse to me. I usually draw the line at 3 items. If I have 3 it gets a section, 2 to 1, it goes in the misc box.

Then there's the catch-all section I call "Tenchi Muyo/Sammy." Trying to sort out the various TV, OVA, Game, etc. into seperate categories would drive me mad. I Like my gallery and all. I just prefer the hunt more than the taxidermy.

Since I like to seacrh RS by series to look at cels, I am predisposed to list each series separately. I also realize that using the counter allows me to let others know that I have only one cel from a series. It seems to be 50/50 on one shot gems and just a cel, so I always look anyway :D

When I view RS galleries I find it really depends.

If a gallery has a small number of titles (say less than seven) then listing the individual cels in their own section works. As the list of shows gets longer, it gets harder to notice each individual show title among all the writing. In that case, I find that a miscellaneous section is more helpful.

Anyways, that's my 2 cents.

I am not frequent visitor :( :( I check sometimes recent update and scan them what's new..... And sometimes I open some galleries..... That is it :( :(

So for me I prefer a title separated so that I can scan them easily but even this sometimes I miss updates.... :P

I rarely look through Misc. sections, so I prefer each title listed out individually, no matter the size of the gallery. I think that one-hit-wonders deserve spotlights of their own. :P

For me if the gallery curator has put descriptions for the cels, I will probably look at everything just to see what they have to say about the cel, even shows I know nothing about. That way I may come away with a show I want to see in the future. If there aren't any descriptions, I'll just breeze through the thumbnails and only give the real standouts my full attention. Counters don't mean a whole lot to me. But I don't like thumbing through 12 pages of 3or 4 cels, after a while I just give up.

Ditto on what Baylor and birdie said. I don't care for Misc sections. I have one but it's one I'd like to get rid of. That section for me has cels I know little to nothing about and have no attachments. The only reason they are displayed is in case someone is interested in them. I'll easily release any of them.

I'm all for the one hit wonders! :) It's all about quality over quantity in my book. You've saved all your hard earned pennies to buy that wonderful beauty. Why not give it its own section?

As for the counters, I just think it makes the home page of the gallery messy. It takes only a few seconds to click on the series link to see how many someone has. But I have to admit, I hate scrolling through 8 pages of 3 cels when it could have been 4 pages of 6 cels. And if the owner writes descriptions, I'll click on the thumbnails. But if they don't, why bother? :?

I follow glorff's views on posting and using the counter.
This goes especially for my Cowboy Bebop cel. I have always wanted to get more cels from the series, but haven't found any in my price range. :? But throwing Spike into a misc. section I think would be a loss.

I don't mind looking at misc. sections. But I use the Rs Search to find series I'm interested in and to see what other members have updated. If the shows title isn't listed in the cel description then it's for sure that I will miss the new post in a misc. section.

Like others have said though it is all personal taste.

Hmmm...
Well I've had my gallery both ways over the years.

I had a ever cel in it's approriate title section...but honestly...it was too long. Probably 50+ titles.

I also found that when I search I don't click on title's I'm not familiar with.

So in my gallery...I decided to hit my main collections (armitage, windaria, sailor moon, etc) with titles...and everything else I sorted according to MY TASTE (amazing women, bathing suit beauties, kissing couples, etc).

HOWEVER, let me clarify...I did try to keep everything SEARCHABLE for those people trying to locate cels. The title to each individual cel is it's FILM title. (ELEMENTAL GEARBOLT, JUBEI-CHAN, CLEOPATRA D.C.).

So..even though I did it for me, I tried to keep other people's searches in mind.

Enough on that!
