Idiocracy...

Post by wELCOME cONSUMER »

...is the name of a movie. You probably haven't heard of it. If you have, then
you have more than likely pissed off Fox Studios. They've done their best to
prevent you from learning about Mike Judge's Idiocracy.

Mike Judge hasn't made a movie in about 7 years and it was a box office flop.
But it was a huge, major, insane success on video and, later, DVD.
Ever hear of Office Space?

Idiocracy was filmed in 2005. Fox sat on the movie for over a year. Several
scenes were re-shot, pushing back its release. Many of the very famous
and well known name brands you see in the movie made the release trickier.
At one point, Fox begins to nickel and dime Judge for some of the special
effect shots. Judge, being the passivist, asks his friend Robert Rodriguez
to shoot some of the shots for free. All this back and forth pushes the movie
back further and further.

And where's the big media push? Surely everyone knows Mike Judge.
We've all seen Beavis & Butthead or King of the Hill. Fox didn't advertise
the movie at all. You can't find a trailer of it. There isn't one.

The movie is playing in approximately 50 theatres. Considering the
average movie with a decent push and reputation gets released to
something closer to 3,000 theatres. Or more. 3 of the theatres are located
in Texas, Mike Judge's home state.

Why am I writing all this? Well, I accidently saw Idiocracy and it's...
funny. It's hilarious sci-fi. It's got this amazing score and weird
Planet of the Apes feel going on. I highly recommend everyone go
see it, if they can. If not, get it on DVD when it comes out.

I posted this story because it makes me mad. Grrr...

Secretary of the Interior. What's weird is, I could tell you the entire plot
and it still wouldn't give anything away. The movie is so weird. But
the writing... man, it's just so over the top funny.

If you do get to see it, you'll recognize some of the actors and voices.
Several people are from King of the Hill and/or Office Space.

Ah, don't lose hope. Movie execs wouldn't know a good film if they saw it. There have been instances where small, unregarded films have gained major popularity in theatres simply due to word of mouth. My Big Fat Greek Wedding started in only 100 theatres, as did Lil Miss Sunshine. The one I am rooting for is Half Nelson. I caught a screening of that here at UNLV(film professor got his hands on a reel) and loved it! Our prof here is David Schmoeller, who wrote and directed the classic Puppet Master horror series, as well as Crawlspace.
Time is but an illusion. Lunch time...doubly so.
