How do you tell if a cel or sketch is real?

Post by RoboFlonne »

I get asked that question alot and I just wanted to make sure what I say is true and is generally what you guys do.

1. Check if the cel or sketch looks very similar to other sketches and cels from the same anime
2. Check the seller's collection and reputation.
3. show that sketch or cel to other people who have a good collection and see what they think?

That's usually what I tell them to do! What else would you suggest?

Start with the basics:

Is the drawing on Japanese sized paper?

Is the paper punched?

Does the drawing have a letter/ number?

Are the lines sure and single with good crisp corners and no overlaps?

This will not cover everything (like rough sketches), but it is a good way to start,

and there are always exceptions :?

Usually I just ask the cel/sketch if it's real. It usually fesses up pretty quick when it sees the bat with nails in it...

I could use one of those too! Of course, I'm pretty certain that I should not run with the spiked bat AND a spiked beverage!

Generally if it looks like it's been used hard (scuffs, dings, paint splats, creases, coffee stains, etc.) it's a genuine studio artifact. Fan cels and repro sketches look crisp and new, as if they have never been touched, which they haven't. From what I've heard about actual studio practice, sketches and cels are means to an end, and they get treated with remarkable casualness, particularly after they've been scanned or photographed.

Plus genuine cels have that "trace lines" smell. Open the bags and breathe deeply. When you awaken from your harem- or bishie-infested dreams, you will never forget that distinctive scent. That will be one of the surest signs of genuineness in your future collecting.
