I may just follow suit, going loosely on the meaning of being a true Samurai, but I would have to say as swordsmen go, you cannot get any more renowned than Miyamoto Musashi!

For anime, I can only recall Takatsuki Gentatsu (Rurouni Kenshin) and Kyuzou (Samurai 7) being of or near to the class, as far as characters that I liked; most others just carried swords.

Historically speaking, I don't personally have any favorites. I do respect Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (therefore I am eager to see the anime Basilisk when it starts on channel IFC) and Daimyo Konishi Yukinaga because of their tact, rationality and personal convictions (even though I doubt you could consider Konishi as a true Samurai because of his actions and beliefs). As nothing more than a fierce warrior, Kato Kiyomasa was undoubtedly one of the best! Yeah, you can probably tell which time period I've been sorta learning about...

I don't watch too many Samurai films, although I highly recommend Aragmi - I'm not only a fan of actor Kato Masaya, but the movie had extraordinary essence and feel. The sword fights were wonderfully enhanced with modern music (guitars and synthesizers) which gave the action sequences a lot of oomph!

I personally just adore warriors of any class or status, especially those with honor and strong beliefs, be they "hero" or "villain". And if an anime or film has sword-fighting and epic battles, I'm interested!!

Ummm.. Saitou Hajime… both RL, PMK and RK.
I also like Jubei and Musashi… Mostly from anime I’ve seen especially Shura no Toki
Ran the lady samurai from the anime.
Jin from Samurai Champloo…
Kondou from NHK Shinsengumi and “Shinsengumi” by Toshiro Mifune.

I can’t think of anymore for the moment…

I do not know Date Masamune... Is that a recent Taiga drama?

Jubei is so cool... He was featured in a few anime if I recall but Shura no Toki is the best, although he lost the duel of course to Takato-kun.

Here's a great AMV for Jubei vs Takato http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmlVtv6JvWU

It was on an old NHK drama. He lived sometimes around 1570 to 1640 (or 50's) He lived until he was around 80YO!
Here I found via google:
http://www.samurai-archives.com/masamune.html

He was fuku shougun (vice shougun) next to Ieyasu Tokugawa and he worked for tokugawa until the third shougun (if I remember correctly....)..... He was been afraid of many people at the time and before Sekigahara, he was like Oda nobunaga ;) (with one eye :) )
Cool :D Must watch :)

Oh I see. Yes I visited that site before but since his name "Date" wasn't familiar I would always pass over him at Samurai archives.

And please do watch, it's an interesting "take" on how Jubei lost his eye. ;)

Usually whenever I watch TV shows about him, it says he lost his eye from training or from a fight..... Is it the same in the anime????

*smiles and nods* An amazing fight... at least in Shura no Toki. BTW Shura no Toki spanned 3 generations so they covered Musashi, Jubei and Sakamoto Ryoma/Shinsengumi. :D

Live-action: Well, since Krafty hasn't spoken up (although I may be acting presumptuous),
I'm going to have to go with Ogami Itto played by Tomisaburo Wakayama.
Yeah... I do love those Lone Wolf and Cub films.

Non-anime: I gonna have to go with GuyvarIII and say Samurai Jack.
Anime-wise... I hear that Samurai Champloo thing has a couple of decent samurai/swordsman types.Image

I'd agree with kizu, Shura no Toki was good!

Live action movies - Samurai (1, 2, 3) Trilogy from the '50s. Zatoichi the selfmade samurai and yes Lone Wolf.

Anime - Jin (SC), Kyuzo (S7) and Kyo from Samurai Deeper Kyo.

Lynxa! :tongue to your Mugen comment!! :crackup ok, so he's more like a mongrel. But that's ok.

I had forgotten about Ogami Itto. Hard to top him. :D

And oh this is so cool, I now have several things on the "watch sooner than later!" list!!
