From what I can remember I only made an error when bidding for a KITE item on YJ.

I came home from the pub one Saturday night and saw a new auction- what I thought was a KITE hanken, I put in my conservative bid of 10,000y just to get it registered on my deputy page.
I double-checked it the following day to discover that it was just a poster!

I was hoping that this item would be inexpensive because I didn't want to pay 10,000y for a single poster; it ended just below 5,000y, which is still a lot.

After this experience, I learnt never to browse auctions whilst under the influence of alcohol. I've not been to the pub for nearly 2 months now ;)

With regard to bidding techniques, I have a couple of my own but don't wish to reveal them to the world. Let's just say they involve knowing who you're up against and bidding accordingly.

How about 52 bids? My own personal best. :D But I won that sucker. :hurt:

Back to the original topic: Yes I did once put in a bid of 385000 instead of a bid of 38500. 8O Thank the cel gods it went no where near that.

1st trick -> Place an outrageous bid to discover someone elses's bid. Used by people on auctions they are very interested to win. Lets say the current bid is 1000 Yens and there's someone else you believe bidding high. So you place an outrageous bid of lets say 100000 Yens that should outbid him for sure. The auction goes up to 13000 Yens and you are winning. Then you just have to lower your maximum bid to 13000 or 13500 Yens. The effect is that you have outbidded the other person with only 2 bids, what makes him believe that you are going high for this item. The double edge sword thing is that if the other guy had placed a bid of 90000 Yens you are screwed. This cannot be done on ebay because you would have to retract your bid, and that leaves track of your actions. The "offended" person could then take action against you.
Actually, not only does ebay record the retraction, it also emails the previous bidder to notify them that they have been outbid. Even if you use a different ID to place and then retract the bid, it's pretty obvious what is going on.

I have had this done to me a couple of times. In the first case, it was easy to counter-bid the expected snipe in the last second or so of the auction. In the second case, I wasn't willing to exceed my first bid. It let me redirect my money in another direction sooner, since I didn't have to wait until the end of the auction to see if I won or lost. I still made sure not to over commit in case the "tricky" bidder changed his/her mind, but I did find it very helpful.

As for using this method to phsych out the other YJ bidder, I'm not sure how well that works. I decide how much I'm willing to pay for an item. It realy makes no difference to me how the other bidders behave. I couldn't care less if someone bids in multiple small increments or it's all in one large bid or even odd amounts of yen. My own bid patterns vary based on my irregular work schedule more than due to any "trick" or strategy. Sometimes I bid my max right off the bat, sometimes I don't.

As for accidently typing in the wrong number of yen, I have to admit I have come close to doing it a couple of times, but have always managed to catch it.

No, I'm very careful about what I type. All those 0's without the dots can really mess me up X|

I usually have someone double check my ammounts before I bid but, in some cases (IE when sniping) that doesn't work so well. The only time I've really almost done it though is when I wanted to bid 250,000 But tried to put in 2,500,000. Luckily My deputy service limit Isn't that ridculously high so it didn't let me and I fixed the bid before it went through.

That bidding trick info is interesting though I'm not sure that I'd ever use it. I'm pretty straight forward about my bidding I usually put in half my highest bid at the begining and half at the end if it's something I'm very interested in. If it's not something I'm really interested in and it just cuguht my eye I put my entire bid in at the begining and if it's something I'd pop out my kidney for I bid much more eradically and I'll probably bid war and extended for hours (well maybe not hours but a long time at any rate)...

$50 is still alot for a poster... I hope you get a lot of love from it, Krafty!!
Cheers, RoboFlonne. The poster shows the lead girl, Sawa, naked. It's a rare poster but it's now rolled up with all my other special Japanese prints and anime posters like Mezzo, Mononoke, Fist of the North Star, Pokemon... LOL

This all just . . . boggles the mind. 8O I don't think I've ever misbid. I'm always very careful about what I put into the system. Besides that, my bid limit is ridiculously low compared to some of yours. :D Starving college student and all.

I had another funny incident. Three weeks ago I bid on something at Mandarake. I wrote down "17900 yen" on a paper that I was using to keep track of my bidding. I found out later that I had only bid "17400 yen". :sweatdrop

My rival bidder waits awhile before placing a bid that moved the current high bid to 17500 yen. I thought I was still leading so I didn't place another bid. I was ready to go up to 26500 yen to 28500 yen or so, but I had thought I was winning. :D

Later I logged in to pay and found out I didn't won. 8O

I think it's kinda funny looking back at it now. lol :hitting:

I've had some close calls but luckily my deputy lets me double check my bid before I confirm it. :P

I think we all have placed inadvertant high bids before, especially in the cel auction frenzy the last 1 minute of a YJ auction. The biggest I've made was about 200K yen for a cel won for about 1/10th of the bid. Of course it was a CCS cel :)
