Fancel objects
Okay so I was looking around at the fancels, not that I have anything against the artist and such… But for those fancels which replicate a production cel, I was wondering how most people feel about those. For the most part I like fancels that are based on non-production like perhaps more artsy, or more based on some others like an image of a card/shitajiki etc. The reason being is I keep thinking, for example right now there are some fancels in YJ that are great imitations of the production ones, if for instance I owned that particular production sequence/shot of the character I think I wouldn’t be too happy seeing it sold off eventhough it’s labeled as fancel since one of the most important (IMO) reason of owning a production is that it is unique. So what do you all think? For myself, I wish the artist would pick to make a fancel of something we would never see as a production cel for the Anime.

This'll probably be an unpopular opinion in this thread, but ...
*takes a deep breath and jumps right in*
I used to think that it would bother me to see a fancel of one of my cels, either in someone else's gallery or for sale on ebay or YJ. I guess because of the uniqueness factor that you mentioned.
Now, though, I have to say I really don't care all that much. I have commissioned fancels from screencaps, which means that, probably, someone out there owns the actual production cel that was used in making that scene/shot. Or, in the case of CG anime, someone owns the production sketch. But, they are items I feel I would never be able to add to my collection, in terms of original production art -- either because I could not afford it, or just because I don't think I'll ever find that particular shot available for purchase.
In the end, if someone commissions a fancel from a screencap that matches one of the cels in my gallery, it's not a big deal to me. I still own the original cel (or one of the original cels, if it's a long sequence), and that original piece is still a unique piece of art that I treasure. Knowing there is a fancel of the same shot out there -- to me, it makes it even a bit more special.
But, that's just me.

I know where you're coming from, but it doesn't bother me too much if someone has replicated a cel I own, you can always tell the difference between original artwork and a copy, plus as long as I know I own the original it really doesn't concern me too much.
Like you, I do appreciate original fanart/fancels far more as they're much more vibrant and imaginative and you can truly see the passion of the artist in his/her own work, for the artwork itself and the character. I mean you compare it to a simple copy/trace and as nice as they can be, for me it doesn't compare to original work.
Nat.R’s fanart/fancels are a good example of this…her Escaflowne stuff is just awe-inspiring!

me personally, i don't mind if someone has a fan cel of one of my images (though i'm not sure any of my things are that rare for someone to have a fancel of.
but for me in making fan cels... i severly lack the skills to make anything unique, so i have to work from a screen cap... and so far all my work comes from CG, where there are no cels... but I just make them for my own enjoyment... infact i finally grew to like my Alucard one so much I put him on my wall... or maybe i just did that b/c its halloween soon. *shrugs*

Tex-chan – Yeah I know what you mean. It’s almost like a compliment I guess. This question has kind of baffled me somewhat and since I’m new, I don’t know what is the feeling of the cel community about it. Nor do I know if I am thinking this through correctly. But I am kind of glad that it’s not as strict as that. There are fancels out there that are amazing copies and sometimes I would like to buy them but refrain thinking that what if somebody owned it? So for the most part I’m out looking for fancels that is not exact production copy.
Ronin – Cool. It’s not that I’d get bothered if someone made a copy. LOL. Just like HotIce I don’t think I have anything that great. LOL. But since I see some amazing fancels sometimes I want to buy them and just hold off when I realize it’s from production. But yes original artwork is great and I’ve visited natcels, I do not see the escaflowne but do see some of those other fancels. They are wonderful.
HotIce – Great to hear. I really needed opinions of other collectors as I’m a bit confused on the subject matter. And why not show us that Alucard? I’d love to see your work!

Heh, heh ... well, I should also add that I would never expect to see a fancel of any of my cels, as I'm also of the opinion that nothing in my collection is that rare.
I would say, if you like the fancel and think it's worth the going price, you should go for it! After all, if it's a shot or a scene you really want, this can either be a placeholder for the future, when you might get a chance to have a production piece from that scene ... or, it could be your chance to have something from the scene that you love (if the shot is so rare you don't think you'll ever find it).
As with anything in this hobby, I suspect that opinions on the fancel issue vary greatly. My guess is that some people wouldn't like it if fancels are made using their production cel images/scans ... but, maybe they wouldn't care as much if the fancel was from a screencap. I'm not sure if that's enough of a difference to matter, one way or the other. But, like I said, I can only speak for myself.

I personally don't have too much interest in fancels. I've got a couple, but none of them are production shots (except one that was a handmade present that I love dearly
). I would like to try my hand at making one someday . . . but I'm sitting on a piece of regular artwork I never seem to have time to finish.
That being said, I could care less if someone wanted to make a fancel from one of my cels. Just as long as they don't try to sell it as the real deal, I'm fine.

Same for me, I really don't care if someone has a fan cel of one of my cels. I have the oposite feeling, I feel kind of pround to own the original and someone ask or made a copy as he can not get the original, either because he is out of cash or can not find the cel. There is always a difference between fan and original prodution, there are only few exception were the fan cel is EXACTLY the same as the original.
I have one fan cel and could compare it not for real but could compare the image of the real production and the fan cel, there was no difference, truly amazing. Here is the fan cel http://akadro.rubberslug.com/gallery/im ... 5615&Pass=

I love fan cels! I have no problem with them. I have actually started making my own because I know my chances of finding and owning the real thing are very slim. Like akadro said, I would also feel kinda proud if I saw a fan cel of a cel I owned.
" I'm Usagi Tsukino, 16 years old...in the first year of high school. I'm a bit rash and a crybaby...but, I'm actually an agent of love and justice....pretty Sailor Soldier, Sailor Moon"
I have actually bought one fan cel off Y!Japan, and it's absolutely stunning, and could quite easily pass for a Hanken...

As for my fan cel of Alucard...

As many people will tell you, I am -not- a huge fan of my own work, I think i'm talentless.... but if you like alucard, my fan art section of my RS gallery is:

Well... I'm with those who enjoy fan cels. I own a number of them, mostly Kenshin cels for which there is no hope that I would EVER find, let alone own, the original.
Cept... that the original of a Kenshin for which I did myself a fan cel was on eBay last week!! I couldn't believe it. I also couldn't afford it given my current state of overspending on the other hobby.
I'm happy with mine... someone else owns the original, and know it. It''s worth much more, and they know it. But I enjoy having something I can put up on the wall. (Andddd... bonus! I don't have to worry about line fading!

I love fan cels. I don't buy too many since it always seems that I am putting my money on regular cels.
I don't mind if a fan cel matches one of my cels. In fact I know of two that do. I know I own the original, so it's no big deal. I am kind of surprised at the answers on this thread. It wasn't too long ago that there was a lot of opposition to making fan cels that matched production cels. Maybe it has to do with the fact that more shows are CG and so the only cels out there for these shows are rilezus, reproductions and fan cels.
Either way, I still prefer fan cels that are either from non-production images or even better - totally original. I can always tell myself that maybe someday I will own the production cel. I can't say that with an original fan cel image. Original fan cels also take a lot more talent and imagination. I really appreciate the skill and effort it takes to make them.
