Yeah! I've finished. It only took me an additional five more weeks than I wanted it to. ....stupid government facility and their '30 minutes a day' rule.

Anyways, I do apologize for the delay....

Thank you to everyone who managed to finish the open house. I appreciate
your time, effort and participation in this event. If you have not finished,
please try to do so if you can. I know many of you are simply unable to and
I completely understand that.

Now that the open house is officially over, does anyone wish to share
feedback they received? Or maybe thoughts about the event? Suggestions?

I thoroughly enjoyed exchanging feedback with everyone. I received a
recommendation from someone which I've implemented in my gallery.
Regular sized cels now feature descriptions under the scan instead of on the side.

Here's an example:
http://welcomeconsumer.rubberslug.com/g ... mID=124601

Pans and oversized scans will continue to feature descriptions on the right side.
Example: http://welcomeconsumer.rubberslug.com/g ... mID=150754

Due to the size of the larger scans, the descriptions don't fit underneath properly.
It tends to break the dimensions of my gallery.

That suggestion, I felt, improved the aesthetic quality of my display.
I received a few comments about my lack of a wishlist. I'm still on the
fence about creating one, for various reasons. I might eventually make
one, but who knows.

The more elaborate, exhaustive feedbacks were the ones I appreciated
the most. Several open housers sent novella sized emails, which were
an absolute treat to read. I felt they took the event as seriously as I
hoped they would and that was truly wonderful. They were constructive,
honest and thoughtful. Thanks so much for that guys.

I understand some people are shy or simply follow instructions verbatim.
Which is fine. But the people who went above and beyond the minimum
requirements stood out during this event.

Thank you everyone, for making this event a success. I'd like to make
this a regular affair. Any thoughts for next time?

Overall it was a good experience because I made sure I paid a lot of attention to each gallery- visiting some that I wouldn't normally out of choice because the series are unknown to me.
Seeing some of these pieces made me aware of the art styles a bit better and it was good to learn about other collectors via their comments, the most important part of an individual's gallery.

The part I underestimated was how long it took to give feedback to everyone. 3 weeks was too short so I apologize to several people who received my email later than anticipated.
This is something we look into for next time- perhaps each of us focusing on 3 or 4 direct questions each and leaving it at that, rather than using the Qs for guidance whilst writing about every other aspect of the site's design and the collections.

In response to my gallery, I found some comments very helpful. Seems that people would, on the whole, read a blog. So I've since made a couple of new entries and will continue to add more cel news regularly.

It was also suggested that my thumbnail images should be larger. I understand that and although I won't be enlarging all the thumbs for the forseeable future [there's too many to do] I have begun to use larger thumbs for the new categories I'm adding. Fancels being the latest addition. The only minor consideration is the file size. My smaller thumbs average 3-4kb whereas the bigger ones are 5-6kb.

I'd be up for doing this again next year. By then I should have a new site design too.

Big thanks to Zetsuai and Welcome Consumer for the organising and hosting of this event.

It was such a great experience for me, I really enjoyed it a great deal.
Now that we have a clear set of guidelines, next year will be much smoother.
I also think we'll start about a month earlier, so it's not so close to the ABA.
The application period will also be extended beyond just one week, so more
people can sign up and participate if they want. Inviting people via the JACML
will also happen next time, which might garner a bigger turn out.

I'm still debating about the best method for the questions. Five questions
afforded some decent feedback. I feel anything more or less than that might
eat up our time or produce cumbersome emails (either epic or brief).
I might require at least 5 questions from everyone but no more. I just don't know yet.

Thanks to another feedback I received during the open house, I went ahead
and fixed my .flv to play in IE. Now, surfers using IE can view the Giant Robo
clip on my front page. I feel my gallery presentation is stronger now, thanks
to the thoughtful commentary I received. That, to me, was the objective of
the open house. I hope others have similar stories. ^_^

To hear directly from my peers was a meaningful experience. We all
collect the cels we like for our own enjoyment, sure. But we display them
online for others. Receiving so much feedback from visitors was quite fruitful.
Hearing what might enhance their experience in my gallery was insightful.

Open House

Post by ginga123 »

I really enjoyed participating in Open House and I received alot of constructive criticism. :)

Most people thought my gallery was good; but, they wished I had a better organization and even suggested I promote my gallery more often by adding the words "Sailor Moon" into each section on the main page.

I have implemented the latter part a few weeks ago; but, I will continue to use my method of organization--it just works for me. *gomen*

I also implemented the suggestion that my sections be alphabetized as well.

In addition, a small number of the feedbacks felt that my gallery was hard to find or remember; and, that I should make a new banner using a cel from my collection----done! I am sticking with the M9 banner with my "Halloween" slogan (complete with web address) for awhile! I worked hard on it and I hope you like it. :)

Now...making a GIF for my gallery button that is good-looking, not blurred, and under 10k....that's another story. :D

I am still learning how to use Photoshop, and am still very busy, so it may take a bit before I can create thumbnails, for all of my cels, without my watermark on them. I didn't have the capability or resource at the time--so I used RSs' nifty instant thumbnail creator.

As for expanding the page sizes in each section--I only did that to areas that had the most artwork that being Hotaru and Sailor Moon. I don't like to use counters in my gallery for each section--it takes the computer too long to download and I try to keep my gallery simple, clean, and dial-up/DSL-friendly. :)

In addtion, some people wished I would update my wishlist. Well, I have a wishlist--it's offline--and I prefer to keep it hidden. If you think I could use some help looking for stuff on my list, and I can trust you, then I will allow you to look at it.

Other than that I appreciate everyone's suggestions! Thank you!
