We've been collecting since 2000 and we go in streaks of collecting and not and honestly I don't see us actually stopping anytime soon. As I'll always have a love of art and that's what most of my cels are to me, art. I don't collect other anime related things for the most part (unless you count the DVD/Manga) Because I don't really care. So as far the anime itself goes I can easily see me having a waning interest in it and am already seeing some signs of it as I haven't watched anything made since 2001 or so. Though I still have a healthy love and appreciation for the more vintage titles. I just fear I'll run out of them eventually :( I think it will be a long time before I "fall out of love" with the artwork though even from the digital shows I have little interest in watching as some of them have lovely artwork.

I, too, have always collected something art-related. When I was a little tyke, I collected those Panini stickers/books(ah..the $.50/packs w/ 8 stickers) and would get frustrated when I would open up so many packs and still miss the final panel of the 8 sticker scene. I couldn't understand why they would make so many of one sticker and so few of another...my child logic rationalized that all the ones I was missing were being shipped on a truck to Alaska.

I've collected cels since June 2003. I'm at the point where I'm very satisfied with my collection. While I've always been rather picky as to the cels that I buy(ie. I'd never purchase anything done by the Toei 'secondary animator squad'), I've grown far more selective as the cels that I wished to acquire were slowly added into my collection. I've obtainned the majority of sequences that I wanted to obtain, which, I suppose, seems to indicate that my purchases will likely be dwindling.

I have no intent on leaving this hobby and, as long as prices are somewhat reasonable and there's still a decent supply out there, I'll purchase those items that meet my specifics. I'd like to leave my collection in the hands of a museum one day...so that future generations can partake in the beauty of manually done artwork. That, and, I definetely don't want any relatives to squabble or squandor these gorgeous pieces for chump change.

I've collected for about seven years now. I don't see myself stopping in the near future. Since cels are gradually being replaced by sketches, I see my collecting slowly decreasing over time.

With no new cel based shows, I figure I will eventually come to the point where I will have filled most of my cel collecting goals. The only ones left will be those incredibly rare wishlist cels, rilezus or fan cels.

I still have my coin collection from thirty years ago, and had them out for a look two weeks ago

I have found new, old series to start collecting as people tire of them and they become available at more realistic prices. :)

I will never NEED to sell my cels, so they will probably be dealt with by my next of kin 8)

I could probably see myself eventually stopping collecting. The expense got to be too much a few years back, and I sold a lot and narrowed my focus down to one primary series and a couple of other special items.

The cels I collect are only getting less common, and I imagine there will be a time when the trickle is so slow that I will lose touch with the hobby. I doubt that I will sell the cels I have, at least not my very favorites, but this is a decision made easier by the dropping prices since around 2001/2002. I doubt many of my cels would make now as much as I paid long ago, when the Animanga forums were full of chit-chat , Anime Taro updates were the gold standard, and I put new, exciting things in my gallery every month rather than every year.

I've been collecting since 1999.

I feel the same way. I really am only attracted to actual production art and prefer cels to sketches, especially if all that is available on the market are douga drawings of the series. I don't collect fan art or rilezus.

I have collected other things like Mexican art, and I don't buy many new things to add to those collections mainly due to limited space, but I still love the things I own. Anime art is probably going to be totally computer designed in the near future and the supply is limited. The auctions on YJ are not what they were when I first started collecting.

I am really happy with our collection and don't plan to sell anything, but I am not adding nearly as much as I was in the past. I expect that soon I will rarely add new stuff, especailly since I am only interested in adding quality pieces.

Hmm. Good question.
My husband was amazed when I hit the two year mark. Now I'm past the three year mark and still going strong. :D

I do have to admit though, that the dolls made me actually contemplate selling cels for doll money. 8O Thankfully, I listened to that small faint voice of reason in my head instead.

I buy them because I love them. They spark certain emotions in me every time I see them. I use them to cheer myself up. I use them just as eye candy. And sometimes, they just soothe my savage beastie. :P
How could I give that up? :)

I’m too new in this hobby (2-3 months?) so my answer is probably not very accurate… But if I compare it to my other hobbies, I grow tired of them around 2 to 4 years depending on how enjoyable it is especially in terms of a community. The more stiff I find a community the faster I’m out of there and the “hobby”. I don’t really like nonsense. As for lone hobbies (just by myself) last very short but I tend to return to them more.

I agree with Mouser's statement and like Vapalla, I prefer cels to dougas. I watched a lot of cel-based shows through the 80's-90's and don't see much new CGI anime nowadays and won't buy too many sketches. Once I've had my fill of Akira, JoJo, Hokuto and Kawajiri shows I'll slow down.

Most importantly, I'd never dislike my cels but could stop buying more if I needed the money for my [future] family. That would be incentive enough for me to stop buying, even though I love the auction and trading experience.

I supposed it'll come to an end at some point. My other lifelong collecting hobbies ended because:

1. I had storage problems for the items.
2. There was overproduction for later items that affected my enjoyment of collecting the older items.

#2. wouldn't play a role in my collecting habit ending because each anime's artwork stands on it's own and is unrelated to the newer ones. Overproduction of newer artwork would never be a problem and in fact is encouraged. :D

#1 might play a role though. At some point I'm going to run out of space. But I also hate to sell stuff.

I'm never going to run out of things to collect because there's always a new anime to collect from. Not until anime production moves completely away from sketches. That would be a problem. My interest would slowly decline from that point.

I've come close to stopping before so imagining my collecting "career" coming to an end is easy to do. When those times came up before, I just switched over to other anime.

If my interest in anime slows down. If new production material ceases to exist. If my storage space runs out. If I have a financial crisis or need to save up money for something big. If I become the resident of a county jail and make a new friend named "Bubba". Any or all of these reasons could make me decide to stop collecting.

i don't think i'll ever stop collecting. my need to collect a particular series spawns from a huuuge sentimentality since childhood, and my appreciation of art. the only thing holding me back is my wallet. unfortunately, this is a vewwry expensive hobby...
