Changing jobs...sort of

Post by kymaera »

Well, the ink has been signed and it's official now. I'll no longer be working
for the same company that I've been at for two days shy of ten years after
tomorrow. They've sold off our division to another company.

It's not a big negative. They've kept almost all the people in the division and
we're getting about equivalent pay and benefits. It's also more of a growth
company...which means more risk, but also more chance of success than
where we are currently. I'll still be doing the same job and working with the
same people (for the most part)...just for a different company.

It's also not a big shock. This has been generally known for months and
we've been preparing for it in SO many ways (just ask Baakay or
klet...they've both heard many rants about all the stuff I've had to deal with).
But, it's still a bit of a strange feeling to realize that tomorrow is the last day
that I'll be at the place where I've been working since I got out of college.

It's going to be interesting to see how things change. We're moving to a
MUCH smaller company which can be both good and bad. To give you an
idea of the magnitude of the change, we were previously less than a
percent of the employees of our current company. In the new company,
we will be about 1/3 of the entire population. I'm sure the change will
have both good and bad points...just gotta see what the mixture ends up
being.

Anyways...enough of the serious stuff. Switch mode to non-serious.

The only thing to do now is have an office christmas party and show them all that you can drink them under the table!

Wow. The longest I've been in one place is six years. 8O
The company we worked for on Kwajalein changed once while we were there, and that was an "interesting" time to be working there.
Many people left because the new company didn't treat them as well as the old, but many of us stuck it out a while.

I hope it all works out better for you with this new company. :) And I hope they don't overwork you all the time since there are so few of you to shoulder the load now.

Just remember to do like my supervisor did at the new company interviews: Iron your shorts.
:crackup
Yeah, I laughed in her face when she told me that.
And, just so you know, they were shorts... not underwear. :P
We all wore shorts on Kwaj to work. (Wouldn't want any misunderstandings there. :P )

He's not joking. He's been doing nothing but whining about it for the past few months. :P

Come to think of it . . . wasn't I still on summer break when you felt the first rumblings? 8O Crazy how time flies by.

Yeah, this guy's had about two or three jobs in his lifetime. I've had four in the past three years (granted, that includes holding two jobs at once, and my school and summer jobs, both of which I keep but don't work at in their respective off-seasons, but still). :D

I can't say "yes" or "no".

1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Hmmm it really depends I guess your mileage for change. The past few years I've gone through some acquisitions, mergers and bankruptcy... Some of my co-workers are happy in a much smaller company where everyone knows everyone and they are more visible, which has it's advantages... I've stayed with the more corporate one but only because we are like an autonomous island in the company so it's still comfortable although the politics is still heavy.

Either way one can't really tell in a matter of a few weeks. Give it some time even if you feel nervous, or if you feel things are not going right. For some weird reason it works out in the end, if you stick with it... And if it doesn't work out there's always some place else to go.
