Are correction layers stupid?

Post by Elot »

Id like to buy a cel but the lines are all faded, i was thinking of putting a correction layer and framed it. I personally dont feel comfortable with it cause it seems make your display tampered or fake.

Any opinions? im talking about professional traced layer not something that like a marker pen thingy

thanks

Museums restore significant art, why can't you? Go for it, it will make you happy in the end. :D

I think correction layers are nice and can really improve the look of your investment. Studios make their own correction layers all the time because the cel should look its best during production. Glorff says it very well, if museums can do it, you can do it too.

We make our own corrections on our cels and we love the results. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who owns a cel with line fade or other damage.

As Glorff and WC say- Go for it!

Some of my cels have studio-made correction layers that go on top of the setup, these usually replace a portion of colour or thicken the lines and when I put them together I can see a positive difference.

If you're adding another layer on top, that's a safe way to do it because you're not interferring with the original art and you can remove it if you're not happy.

Krafty makes a very good point. If you end up unhappy with your correction layer, you can always remove it. And think of it this way, it may be a non-production correction layer but when you add it you can see the cel the way that it was originally, without tampering like Krafty also said. Basically you are just allowing yourself to dive into the past and know what your cel looked like during production before the fading occured. Have fun!

I say do it. As long as you know the cel's real, that's all that matters.
Correction layers are made by studios all the time. And it's not like you're doing it on the cel itself. If you're not satisfied with it, you can always put it aside and just frame the cel. Besides it's a better way to see how the cel looked before it started fading.

I think correction layers are great. I have one cel in my gallery that came to be terribly line-faded (I mean it looked like there were NO lines)! I was unhappy with it, and very unhappy that the seller didn't even bother to mention it (oh yea, btw the picture is an older picture of the cel, it's more faded than it was in the picture).

So I asked my sister if she could make a correction layer. Voila! Perfecto! The cel looks great! :D

I highly suggest it because as others have mentioned, at least you can take it off whenever and still have the authentic cel. It's a great way to give your cel some 'lift' especially if you really like the cel.

I think correction layers are great. Not only does it restore a cel, it also shows that it's owner who got the correction done care about his/her cel enough to go through the trouble of doing so. :)
