Hey yo, good movie

Post by blueheaven »

Just got back from seeing Rocky Balboa, and I just have to say thank you Sly. I am a fan of the first four movies, but that fifth one made me cringe. This film was the perfect way to end the franchise. Sly turned in a very sweet, emotional, and REAL performance. Burt Young was fantastic as well. If you simply want to see a movie that will make your heart leap(when that music kicks in, I dare you not to mark out) then go see this film. This was a very believable performance and premise(which is hard to come by these days), which is why it works so well. Rocky really is the underdog here, and he is not supposed to last two rounds against this very good oponent(props to Sly for making Mason Dixon a real character rather than some third rate villain like Clubber Lang or Tommy Gunn). At the end of the film, the audience stood and clapped, as did I.

When I first heard about this movie, I was thrilled because I also hated Rocky V (who didn't?) I hear another Rambo movie is in the works as well, which I also couldn't be more thrilled about.

Can't wait to see Rocky Balboa. :box1:

Watched it on Wednesday as well and absolutely loved it. I agree with blueheaven that Sly gave a very emotional and real performance. There were several moments in the movie where his dialouge just blew me away, namely when he faces the local boxing licensing committee. He ended the Rocky franchise right with this film :)

Oh it looks like it's time to try this one out. I loved the previous Rocky movies but had misgivings about this one. I guess the whole age thing can't be good got to me. <-- BAD X|

I really should give this movie a chance considering I love boxing per se.

See, to me, his age makes perfect sense. At least they didn't try to make a prequel, a la Red Dragon with the oldest fattest Anthony Hopkins you'll ever see 8O The idea of watching an older boxer intrigues me, which I assume plays into the plot of this film.

It does, and that is where the sense of realism come from. They make no bones about the fact that Rocky is in good shape for a guy in his late fifties, but he still has arthritis and is nowhere near as fast as his oponent.

One of the things I liked about the movie was the sense that this was just as important for Mason Dixon(Rocky's oponent) than it was for Rocky. Both characters were good men with something to prove to themselves.

Oh BH, I agree with everything you said. The movie is truly heartwarming and I loved it's humanity, but you did NOT just diss Clubber Lang!

I diss how he was portrayed, as a one dimensional, third rate movie villain. I love Mr T, and I love the aspect of a hungry competitor going after the champ, but there wasn't much more to him.

Any man who breaks Rocky's spirit is a force of nature. I saw him more of someone baffled by the politics of professional sports, and how angry it made him that no matter how hard he trained or how good he was, he would never get a shot at the gold, and when he did, just mercilously pounded his way to victpry, at least the first time. He had the eye of the tiger, he just happened to also be an a-hole :P
