Is there a doctor in the house?
As some of you know, I'll be getting my masters degree this summer in education(M.Ed). Well, I've thought it over, and I've decided to go after my doctorate as well. I figure I might as well get it now while I am still single and relatively young.
So, any advice from the PhD's in the house?

Also find a good advisor. Finding a suitable advisor is more important than finding a school....
Also one more word, do not give up
(sometimes you will feel you want to give up but be patient).

Well now... as someone who is technically ABD but decided to call it a halt before it killed me, I kind of liked Sensei's advice to me. -- at least I think it was Sensei, although it may have been my hubby, who is also a doctor of thinkology:
Prepare to be functionally insane for the duration.
I kid you not on this.
Although you've seen plenty of evidence, first hand

Thanks all. I watched a good friend of the family go through the process two years ago. She was a pretty stressed person to begin with, and this really made her crazy. I'm pretty laid back, and I don't have a wife or kids to deal with either. I want to teach at a university level at some point. I like the idea of teaching the next generation of educators. It's not a huge pay increase for me($1000 more per year), it's just a step in the direction I want to go.
Plus, I just love the idea of someone calling me Doctor Lowery

Do you know the smallest perk for university level educating would be the schedule change?

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

That's right! The biggest perk is the satisfaction from knowing that you're doing your best to motivate young minds to be the best they can be!Do you know the smallest perk for university level educating would be the schedule change?-cloud-
The ability to change there lives for the better! It's wonderful!

I was commenting on his salary change statement, he's not getting a big change in money but more time is a welcome change. Molding and motivating minds is not a perk really, it's more of an embodiment of the true purpose of teaching. I'm obviously referring to the superficial aspects of the profession and it's a fact that, as a professor, Brian will have the opportunity to be less exhausted and thoroughly enjoy the experience.RoboFlonne wrote:That's right! Tis true. I won't have to keep the hours I have now. Either way, I won't even entertain the thought of teaching at a college level until I get vested in my retirement(which will take another seven years).
As for teaching with a masters, there are some schools that do allow you to teach with a masters degree. However, the schools that I am looking at require a doctorate. I want to teach at a school with a good education department (Northern Arizona, Washington State, Utah, or Cal State would be my top choices).
