there are very very few things i spend money on, so when i can afford it i like to self indulge.
i have made offers before, although i don't really like to... but only for a cel that i *know* i'd keep forever. i've never traded for a wishlist cel... for the right cel, i suppose i would trade off my entire collection. it would have to be a pretty amazing cel, but that's how far i would go.

Frankly, I don't pay much for any one cel. I just can't justify it to myself. The most I've spent is about $150. I got the chance to buy a wishlist for about $350 (and in fact I still could, I suppose) but I can't bring myself to do it.
By the way, Cordelia, I'm in love with your collection!

Nice topic...
I'm starting to get into the phase of "I can afford it or I cannot". I have a set amount for certain wishlist items that if they do come along and it happens to be a hefty price tag... If it's too hefty and makes me lose sleep then it means I can't afford it and I don't really want it. Yes it's a wishlist but the reason I won't want it is because I can't justify it. This has happened a couple of times to me. I've kind of convinced myself that in order to enjoy this hobby I should not feel bad about a cel purchase, either by over-paying or by using "other" funds to get it.
Also lately I wanted to sell my cels to get something, but the more I looked at my current collection, the more I don't want to sell -anything-. I bought my cels with the intention of keeping them. I won't say forever coz I can't tell the future but I don't want to cut into my collection... Once it gets displayed in my gallery I find it hard to separate from it... Yes I am weird like that.
I'm really trying to be good... Right now there is something more important to me than cels, although I have not completely cut off buying (I still do need my fix after all), I only buy smaller items in much less frequency. The expensive series must wait and even then when I get back (aka my other commitment is done), I still don't want to over pay unless it's something that drives me insane... Thankfully enough only one cel has managed to do that to me and no it's not mine -yet-... Will I go into debt to get it? The answer is a resounding "NO". But will I overpay for it? Yes, my first offer was already overpaying for it but it was NFS. If for some reason the collector offered it for sale for twice what I originally offered, then I will let it pass. Generally if a wishlist cel is more than my holy grail cel, I tend to think it's WAY overpriced and pass. I don't know if that's a good basis or not, but my friend tells me I've gotten spoiled... Ehehehehe....

At the moment, I'm still in a bit of shock. I've always been rather 'reasonable' about the cels that I purchase and don't spend outrageous amounts of money on my cels (my most expensive turned out to cost a hilarious $666)
...
I just spent $450 on a background. Admittedly, it matches a cel I already own (and comes with another cel from the same sequence!) - but...it's not even painted.
It's production, but it's a photo that has been CG edited and printed out. It has animator's notations on it and I'm sure I'll love it dearly.
But...Gah! The things that we do for true wishlist items!!!!!

When I started collecting, I decided on a maximum amount I would spend on a cel and at first it was $100. !he highest I will go now is $250 and only 1 cel has cost that and maybe 2 were close. The vast majority of the collection cost $100 or less and I don't think the art quality has suffered from lack of $1000+ cels. Part of the fun of collecting was the challenge of finding quality art on a limited budget. I have enjoyed spotting excellence in lesser known anime or underappreciated series, or finding bargains on better-known series. I think if I could suddenly afford the really expensive stuff, it would be a thrill at first buying some pricy pieces, but I don't think it would ultimately be quite as enjoyable a pass-time.
I also don't want to sell cels to buy different ones. When I collect a series, with a few exceptions, I like to find as many characters as I can. I think of the cels from that collection as all parts of a whole.

I feel the same way. There is ALWAYS something nice just around the corner, waiting .... and sometimes it's a wishlist cel at a remarkably affordable price. At some point I learned (I'm not sure when) that I'm never going to have a problem finding SOMETHING that I like. Now I don't feel the need to go on a spending binge for any ONE particular item.

I've never had to go to extreem lengths for a wishlist cel. I already have my "ultimate" cel and it was just a case of emailing the dealer.
I replying to this thread because I'm about to go further than ever before to obtain a wishlist item *drumroll*
After recieving my Xmas bonus, I searched dealers and auctions for something at bit special to treat myself to with the *extra* cash. Nothing quite did it for me and suddenly I knew what I wanted - something I've always wanted but never considered before because it's out of my league price wise.
Well, to hell with it, I'm gunna go for it! The "right" cel of this character hasn't turned up yet, but when it does I'm going to be able to pay for it! I've saved my xmas bonus and held back on auctions that I would have jumped on before to save money. This has been so difficult and is definately the most extreem length I've ever gone too, it's been so hard seeing something I've really wanted *and* been able to afford only to turn it down. But I guest thats the extent to which I want this cel.
Wahhhhh, now I'm scaring myself
Oh and just for closure - I'm planing on catching the Nekobasu! meow

I do not think I have quite gone to the EXTREME extreme, but I found myself spending WAY MORE on a cel than I had ever dreamed of spending before. I JUST got in my HUGE wishlist piece that took me months to pay off, and after looking at it, I can honestly say it was worth every single penny I spent on it. That feeling you get when you finally receive something you have been trying to find for so long is well worth the wait.

If you find something you really like and have the extra $$, I'd say go for it!
Base on the series I collect, to get a wishlist cel I definitely need to fork out more $$ than I'd dream of when I started this hobby. Recently, I did and when I look at the cel, I feel happy
Think about it, you can spend the same amt on a branded bag and the value plummets with use. But the cel is for keeps and its value may increase with time

How much I would pay for a cel?
Being assertive and persistent are common characteristics for serious cel collector. I am sure you all have the experience staying up all night just to make sure you place that last second bid in Yahoo Japan for a cel or send 20 emails a day to bug somebody to sell you the cel you want.
I would, and I do, pay whatever it takes to get the cel I want, no matter what. The desire to own and to win drives me to spend the maximum amount of money I can afford or sometimes more than my affordability to get that cel.
So, folks, money is always there for us to earn, but that one unique cel we miss may never come back. Go with your heart, buy that cel and share with us your pride and joy.
Cheers,
Alex

Well said Alex
As for me... well I really wanted cels from a particular series.. SE:Lain but could never find one..
One day a collector registered on anime-beta and I went to his site and went
"Holy @#&^$! He owns them ALL!
..... they must.. be.. MINE
!!!!!!!"
So I pulled a few favors
and now I'm marrying him
I would say thats the most extreme stunt I've pulled for a few cels.

I've been thinking about this question/thread for a while now and I still can't answer the question.
The highest level wishlist cel that I have bought was only $250. I guess no one else wanted it. I have spent a lot more on lower level wishlist cels and non-wishlist items.
I don't know how high I would go if I had to really fight for a "will give kidney" cel. I'm not sure I want to find out.
