Trying to custom made a Cel Frame

Post by Elot »

Im planning to make some custom made Cel frame entirely made of glass or transparent plastic, without any wooden border and paper mats. I just felt like its a lot more modern and doesnt make your wall looks like a museum

more of like this type

Image

but im sure we cant get away from border to cover the cel edges, also have to consider factors such as UV, humidity and acids. Hopefully someone has an idea or suggestions

thanks

A border would definitely help as it improves the look of the cel by hiding the rough edges. If you want a more modern look, you could go with a metal border.

A frame entirely of glass? Wow, I've never seen such a thing but it sounds kinda cool.

A frame made of glass or plastic...

I think some sport memorabilla stores sell top loaders, made from uv protected plastic.

I would take one of them and carefully separate the two sheets, and that would net you 2 sheets of uv protected plastic.

However, no matter how uv protected your sheets are. Light will destroy anything it gets really in contact with!

Love the example photo!

Seeing that image, I thought the ability to see the "whole" cel would be what you'd want. I mean that's what a cel as art would be.

Try to get UV plexie glass, and cut some clear plastic tubing (maybe 1/8th of an inch) to fit over the bolts so the cel isn't squished by the two layers of glass. I don't know what to say about moisture, I suppose you could "seal" the frame with clear tape.
Good luck with your project! Please, show us a finished image when you can!

Consdier viewing angle

Post by Alex »

There are multiple UV rating on glass and plastic. The museum grade can cost you.

I agree with the comment posted earlier, no matter how much UV protection you have, the sun will damage your cel in long run. The trick is to place your framed cel away from sun as much as possible.

There is another key factor is the viewing angle. I use a professional frame shops for my cel. The owner always uses non glare, low UV plastic to frame my cels for the following reasons:

1. wider viewing angle since I usually hang them in place without stong lighting.
2. low UV has less color distortion.
3. Plastic is a lighter and safer than glass.

Actually since your choice of using just glass with no frame to house your cel, I would guess you wish to expose as much original state as possible. Therefore, I would think an oversize glass with no hiding of the edge may allow the viewers to appreciate the entire cel including the holes and unfinished edges. I would also include the sketch in the glass to further expose the originality of the art.

My personal view for your consideration.

Thanks.

A professional frame shops for his or her cel ought to work.

How about making a gallery with LED lighting?

I don't think LED lights would damage anything!

Personally I'm making my own frame for a Sketch that is double sided.

I'll see if It turns out right and I'll take a picture and put it here!

Actually im thinking of having it sprayed with frost border about 1-2" wide. It will have the size and the look of an iconusa mats.

Ill start canvassing locally for plexiglass and see how it goes, the problem still lies in how it will be sealed against humidity

thanks
