Miller's Collectibles Price Guide 2008

Post by Krafty »

I recently received an email asking if I'd like to contribute some cel images and information to the 20th Anniversary edition of the Miller's Collectibles Price Guide 2008.
Here's a link to the last book, 2007
I doubt they had any info on cels in previous publications so it'll be cool to get Cel Collecting 'on the map' and more widely recognized among the public.

It's still in the early stages, but I've been giving some consideration as to what cels I should submit. Everything would have to be rescanned to a large format suitable for print so I don't want to rush in and pick a bunch of my faves too soon in case there's particular criteria for their cel section.

I know you can come up with tons of great suggestions!
What kinds of cel images and themes or series do you think represent the hobby well, bearing in mind it's for a generic price guide?

If you were to select 3 or 4 cels/genga/hanken from my gallery, my general collection [many of you know what else I collect which isn't yet represented on RS] or from the wide world of cel collecting, what would showcase our hobby best?

Why not send him some of your favorite Mezzo Forte Cels!

Hey he chose your gallery, so he must like hentai cels! :bny

I still don't know how he's going to make a price guide with only 4 pictures... /hmm /hmm

Cheers, Flonne. It was a female researcher who contacted me through my AKIRA website and didn't even know about my RS page. She was interested by the items I had for sale but I doubt she knows about the hentai stuff- I don't think that'd be suitable for a family-orientated book anyway ;)
Hentai cels/genga account for a quarter of my collection so that limits what I could send from the offset, *heh*

LOL! To showcase at least one pretty girl is a priority but the focus shouldn't be on her womanly assets. I know what you mean though ;)

Still, a couple of Mezzo submissions would work out well since that series is still appreciated by a lot of people and I know exactly what price each of them fetches. Hmmm, I wonder if they want values based on a UK market or an international one?...

My suggestion of 4 images was simply to give everyone a tight framework to think around and if I see that the same image has been chosen by you guys more than once, it'd be wise to keep that in mind for the real submission.
When it comes to sending artwork, I may actually have 10 pictures at the ready so the editor can pick and choose.

Honestly, as much as I like and have been influenced by your gallery, especially your great JoJo and Hyper Police collections, I would focus on the cels that a non-collector would be most apt to consider owning. From your collection, that would mean the VHD material, which is superb and droolworthy. But (somewhat to my regrets) I'd say that other examples should probably stick to the well-known series, such as Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, Pokemon, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, historical examples like Astroboy and Simba the White Lion, and a selection of Miyazaki films, including pricey ones (like Nausaicaa and Totoro) and more reasonable ones (Kiki, Porco Rosso).

With sketch material you should certainly include Bleach and FMA. Perhaps Fruits Basket as well.

It goes against my grain to say this, as I don't own a single item from any of these series, and yet I think my collection is valuable, to me anyhow. But chances that people are going to want to know what a Tree of Palme production background is worth, or an episode-ending Saiyuki sketch, or a Tonde Buurin henshin cel, are all equally remote.

But it should be done, and thanks from all of us for helping get us on the map. (That is, until the newbies come in and start paying inflated prices for "our" favorite bargain series.)

As a price guide I guess...

You would go from Highest to least expensive!

Neon Genesis and Miyazaki's would lead the top...

I like your Kenshin would be in the middle... with Mezzo Forte!

I would also say that there are niche markets... I think this section would probably add 50 pages to their book! I still don't know how they will write a guide if they know nothing about it.

I would submit the following cels and sketches:

http://blueblade.rubberslug.com/gallery ... mID=185658

http://blueblade.rubberslug.com/gallery ... mID=129444

http://blueblade.rubberslug.com/gallery ... mID=151125

http://blueblade.rubberslug.com/gallery ... emID=99051

I know this is all subjective. I'd throw in this one just 'couse it's from ARMS :

http://blueblade.rubberslug.com/gallery ... mID=128925

As it's a price guide, a good cross-section of value would be good to help people who don't know about cels and collecting. Most don't understand they can get something wonderful and not drop a ton of money.

How awesome!!!! :bny

I don't have any suggestions as it looks like Sensei and Stu have left you valuable ideas. :)

I just really wanted to say how great of an opportunity this is, and congratulations on getting chosen to do it! .rockon.

Krafty

Just checked out your site. Awesome VHD collection and now I understand the comments about Mezzo Fonte.

I would definitely vote for VHD.
