Sensei's Anime Gallery Is Open Again

Post by sensei »

I've finally completed the refurbishing (with the exception of the Condition Green Storyboard gallery, which still needs tweaking). You may discover a few remaining design flaws, but the makeover is now finished enough to let visitors walk around freely.

You'll find lots of new features, ranging from improved scans, wider use of screen caps (put below the scan, as most of you advised), generally a more visually rich environment, and a greatly expanded and redesigned "Quick Gallery Tour."

Visit the New Acquisitions Gallery for a quick look at what's gone up since the start of refurbishing: seven new cels from TnN (including a lovely OP), two from Tonde Buurin (Kouichi confesses his secret love for Buurin!), one from Vampire Princess Miyu (a chilly Reiha), and four impressive Tree of Palme movie cels. Also a new batch of NieA_7 sketches for all of us who need more zen in our lives, and a fun new Vampyworx reanimation of a set of KKJ dougas (Kaitou Sinbad doing a Tarzan swing!)

Also, two new galleries have been opened, one for the classic 1980s anime series that most of us know as "Grimm's Classic Fairy Tales," and the other for sketches from the new (2006) CGI series "Sasami: Mahou Shoujo Club," a splashy reincarnation of characters from the Tenchi Muyo/Pretty Sammy narrative worlds.

Enjoy!

This one ( http://sensei.rubberslug.com/gallery/in ... mID=191015 ) is adorable. I don't know anything about the show, but that little girl is so cute!

Congratulations on finally completing your construction! The scans are much better in their new scale. The Gallery tour is very helpful as it makes it so much easier to find all the new entries spread throughout the gallery.

The Palme additions are great, my favorite being that of Gyrariko, that creepy pervert. I also love that sweet-expressioned hopeful Palme.

Some fine new TnN aquisitions too! The group cel with Cerebus is typical of all the great group cels of that episode. The new OP cel is a perfect companion to your sequence mate.

I like seeing Kaito Sinbad in action! The Mayuko sketches are really sweet. I loved that scene, so it was fun seeing sketches from it.

Yay! More Buurins! Keiko has some of the best expressions (rivalled only by Karin!)

The Grimms Fairy Tales cels are so delicate. (Sadly, the viedo clip was pulled by Youtube for copyright infringement.) The newest incarnation of Pretty Sammy is cute, and I'm happy to see some art from it.

Last but not least, the Reiha is beautiful. I love how her clothes billow out as she swoops down for another icy attack.

I'm sure everyone is happy to see the Sensei museum re-openned and I bet you are glad all that labor is over!

Thanks to those who have braved the acetate jungle that my collection has become! Visiting (nearly) every single page in the site twice, once to check on(and change) the settings and once to look for problems has made me much more aware of the problems that its size and diversity has caused. Look for me to spend Lent working on some additional projects, such as a gallery devoted to special issues in understanding animation art.

After arriving home, I chased the remaining cels out from under the refrigerator, scanned them, and sent them to their home in the closet. So now there are two new MKR cels and a CCS action fancel, mostly thanks to the generosity of my friend Rallihir.

Thanks for the detailed comment, Vapalla. It's nice to see all the newcomers looked at and appreciated in some way, especially the Mayuko, which is from a delightful moment in this quirky series. I went back and deleted the links to YouTube from the Grimm cels. It's irritating that Saban Studios does this ... but has also done nothing to make the series available commercially in the US. It seems to me that even a dub DVD would sell among nostalgia freaks, and a sub/dub DVD would sell even more briskly. (Alas, I understand that the dubbed version is plagued with the little 10-second cuts that made a sub/dub CCS impossible to produce, so in the end I plumped for the pirate version, which has dreadful audio/video, but at least makes the material available. I've never done an academic study that involved so much illegal activity, right from the start.)

Thanks too, all of you who looked more widely. It really did take a lot of time, much more than I expected, but I think getting the image size standardized and the Gallery Tour made complete (there's now a link to every active gallery in it) will save time for each future visitor.

Special thanks to miz ducky and otakusin for singling out TnN cels. I've rarely known a series where even the low-end cels were so infinitely viewable and interesting. And the high-end ones, like the OP, are amazing. Don't miss the "frosted" coloring in this and the sequence-mate, which makes scanning frustrating (it wants to "balance" the colors it sees, but they're off-kilter by design) but viewing it fascinating for more than one reason.

And free lollipops and balloons to all who stop by before the weekend is out!

Thank you rei (and otakusin for staying the night after the gallery closed ... I hope all that Superglue eventually comes off your clothes).

Because I tend to appeal to special tastes and so my gallery gets relatively few reactions to updates, I'll be joining the ranks of those who announce new arrivals here only occasionally. Overall, I'm trying to make it more accessible to people outside the Beta bunch ... not that I disrespect Betarians' taste, but just that I think it's only a part of a much larger interest group that appreciates the wider artistic and cultural significance of cels and sketches.

And Ash Wednesday is coming soon anyhow, my annual time to step out of the lurk/bid/pay/get cycle and renew acquaintances with the things I have and work toward organizing, rehabilitating, and properly archiving them for the long term.

I'll stick around on this board, as my teaching/travel schedule allows, and my good friends will have ways of knowing when I update. They can expect new stuff soon in the Tonde Buurin, PPGZ, and CCS sections, with nice items from Grimm, Tree of Palme, and Tennimon in the wings.

My thanks again to all those who gave me advice on the gallery upgrade and who stopped by to have a look at the results.

I apologize for taking so long to add my penny's worth, but I've actually gone back to your gallery three times now to wander around, but then run out of on-line time to come back and comment! :) There is so much there to see and to mention, that I wasn't quite sure where to start!! Perhaps it's best to start with the top layer and work inward, because that's how I feel going into the depths of your collection: it starts at the home page and you go deeper and deeper and deeper as you work your way in. A very cool feeling as you progress. :)

First... the home page is VERY nice. I love the clean feel of it, from the single-line sketches in the banner, to the cool clean blue background, to the way the lovely eyes at the bottom match everything. Beautiful.

Next random thought... I love your use of scrapbook paper for backgrounds! It adds such wonderful, unusual detail to your cels! (I am a scrapper from way back and have about a metric TON of different kinds of paper in my case, but I never thought of using it to back my cels. X| What a dunce I is! It's perfect!)

Third rambling observation... I love your "Quick Gallery Tour". What I love best is how you have pulled one representative cel from certain episodes to highlight, then had a link in your description which pulled up all the other cels from that episode. Ingenious! I have been stymied in trying to come up with a decent way to organize my bloated G Gundam collection, and I really love how you have yours going deeper and deeper from a single cel. I don't know if I have the energy to re-do my entire gallery like you have, but that would be a dandy idea if I ever do. :)

As far as your new additions, I think your Reiha is my favorite. Love the action suggested by the hand and the robes, and I love how her face is so serious and intense while she's clutching that cute little doll. Even though I've never seen the show, it makes pulls me in and makes me wonder what's going on at that moment. I also love your CCS fancel. So pretty. And the paper you put behind offsets it very dramatically.

... Well, you see why I never made it back to comment! :emb I knew once I started rambling that I'd take awhile to get it all out! haha! Suffice it to say that I like your gallery re-do! :) Very nicely done and well worth all the effort it must have taken to accomplish it.
