Year of the Pig Update

I know I said I wouldn't do this, but I thought it appropriate to celebrate Chinese New Year (it's the year of the pig!) by beginning what will be a very extensive addition to my Tonde Buurin galleries. In advance of scanning and uploading, I've already split several existing galleries and plan to add more as I go along.

The series, which features a magical girl who transforms into a Super Pig with appropriate Super Pig Powers, has never been released in this country, even in pirated versions, although I gather an English version was prepared and broadcast, at least in part, in New Zealand. But the cels largely speak for themselves, thanks to inspired character design by Hiromi Kato (Tenshi ni Narumon)

Vapalla and I recently split an auction for what turned out to be some three inches worth of gengas and cels from this show:



She and I are beginning to process this monster swag, and you can see some of my share starting to appear in my gallery.

Highlights:

My third Karin-to-Buurin henshin cel (Amazing: I never expected to see even one come my way.)
A new gallery devoted to the pesty but accident-prone rich girl Keiko.
Another new gallery, this one for what I call "WTF moments.". (Anyone who can explain the one with the giant plastic banana gets a free TB cel!)
This hunky but mysterious dude that I've since learned is Mike, the surfing instructor in the "Beach Party in Hawaii" adventure.

Oh, and I also uploaded some dramatic CCS gengas of Meilin being the not-quite-dead evil fairy in the classic Sleeping Beauty episode.

I'm still kind of lurking, but I didn't want to miss out on replying in your update thread, Sensei. I've been following most of your recent uploads, although I have not been very good about sending feedback to ... well, anyone. (sorry)

But, since I saw the thread here, I wanted to be sure and say how much I love your new additions. The WTF Moments gallery is priceless. I love the range of nutty expressions in there. And, that henshin cel is adorable. Well, really, all the artwork from TB is engaging and adorable. Although I know nothing about the show, I find myself compulsively visiting both yours and Vapalla's updates for the series.

And, I love those Meilin sketches. Fantastic!

Ah no wonder I love the character designs so much, gotta love his characters eyes and expressions.

I am so in love with that cutie Ton-chan, not even sure who or what it is (other than a cute magical yellow piggy). There is such a cute cel from this series with Karin and Ton-chan on YJ atm, pondering purchasing piggies. It's calling my name... otakusin, otakusin, otakusin... lol.

As I have never seen this series, not even one sequence, I am going to grace you with my non-expertise on this humorous cel.

Karin is wanting to be near her crush but at the same time is also quite hungry, not knowing what to choose she asks Ton-chan. Wanting to help poor Karin our cute yellow piggie turns himself into a big banana with Kouichi's cap... I mean she is very hungry and it is a big crush. Poor Ton-chan all he wanted to do was cheer our hero up but alas his quickly thought out plan did not go as well as it had in his mind. In his haste, some bystanders witnessed his piggie change, causing Karin frantically hide her banana crush.

You are quite welcome for my BS expertise, you know where to find me anytime it's needed. Now about that Free TB cel, lol!!

I already wrote to you about these guys, but I couldn't help adding a post too.

The Meilin is awsomely cute and when I read the commentary on the different pages I really cracked up! It is also the perfect companion to your other set of her from that show.

I'm glad you are liking the Buurin art. That was some huge haul of stuff in the last lot, and I would probably be having a break-down in the corner if I had to keep that entire 3" stack.

I especially like the WTF section as that was an entirely appropriate name for the cels that you posted there. TB sure has a lot of WTF moments!

The Keiko cel with the Mecha outfit looks like a predursor to one that Yuusuke wore in TnN. I like how her face is framed in the beck opening. Your cel of Mike looks great, but your best full set-up is "Mission Un-possible"

That's the kind of image that makes me wish I could have a copy of the series, even in Japanese or Chinese so I could figure out what is going on.

Thanks, all for visiting. As a recent thread pointed out, most collectors look at art that goes with series that they know well, and so a series like Tonde Buurin is really disadvantaged because the number of people in this part of the world who have seen it is very, very slim. About the only way of getting a sense of the texture of the show is to visit the episode summaries posted on Keith's Tonde Buurin Page. So I doubt that there will ever be a large number of TB collectors and art patrons, which has the dubious advantage of keeping the stuff cheap (but I see that prices have already spiked up a little on YJ as dealers poke through their cellars and see that the stuff is selling).

Tex-chan, lurk all you like! You're a charter member of the Frequent Lurkers Club, which gets you free coffee and Danish in the snack bar. Folks are just glad to see you!

Cordelia, what is interesting is that, for all the slapstick moments, the cels seem to contain a lot of bittersweet moments, ala Tennimon. When I get my new Karin portraits up, you'll see: she can be extremely SD in the most rubberfaced way, and at the same time extremely pretty and wistful.

otakusin, your free cel will be in the mail soon! Ton-chan is Tonrariaano the Third for long, but Karin keeps getting this tangled up on her tongue, so they settle on Ton-chan. (CCS fans ... sound familiar?) He's an alien who is undergoing a trial to see if he's worthy of becoming the king of Buuringo-sei, an otherworldly realm inhabited by piggy sorts of magical creatures. Yeah, nice cels of him are surprisingly uncommon. If you want to go for the one on YJ, go ahead: Vapalla and I are still awash in TB stuff to scan.

Thanks Vapalla and Tex-chan for giving Meilin her fair due. I love that moment and was delighted to nab the planning sketches for it.

We ALL would love to know why poor Jimmy-kun (he of the swirly coke-bottle glasses) got dressed up as a girl (the lipstick and rouge were a wonderful extra not visible in the dealer's scan). I'm guessing that it's part of a plot to uncover Buurin's secret identity, but "let's all put on disguises" is always an invitation for great slapstick, as those who know Pogo and I Love Lucy know. (Boy, don't those two allusions date me! )
