Watching anime w/ your "other"

I was just wondering how many people here who are in relationships, watch anime with that person? I've had 2 gf's since I've become an otaku and I've had really different responses from them. The first absolutely hated anime at first, then got hooked and was searching out different series on her own. The second was kinda indifferent (loved some, but never really watched regularly) until recently, and she's been almost turned off completely. I feel like anime in general is more geared towards men, so I feel like its easier for men to get into it, but I've noticed that there are quite a few women here, and I was wondering how ya'll got into it.

I -LOVE- anime. I got into watching it b/c I suffered (still do) from insomnia... and saw Outlaw Star on Adult Swim back in... um... 2000... 2001? It all kind of built from there. My story is a bit opposite of yours, I had to pester my ex-bf to watch some animes... though he in turn really enjoyed them and started watching a lot more on his own.

I'm with Hot Ice. I love anime. I also got into on my own. One afternoon several years ago, I happened to be home from work early. While flipping channels, I stumbled across Ronin Warriors on Cartoon Network. I think the channel was still pretty new then, and was just starting to get into the whole anime thing. Anyhow, I started watching, and I was hooked back in in a flash. I had loved anime as a kid, preferring Voltron, G-force/Gatchaman, Speed Racer, and stuff like that to the standard US cartoon fare, even though I had to stay up till 1 or 2 AM to watch them. I began taping Ronin Warriors ... from there, I moved on to DBZ ... and then started searching out different shows on my own.

My hubby (he was my fiance back then) has never gotten into anime very much. He will watch some shows with me, if I ask. And, usually, he likes the shows OK -- just not enough to seek out new shows on his own.

I think it could be possible that a lot of anime is more geared toward guys. I happen to love shounen-type anime much more than the titles that are considered "shoujo". But, I also love action-type movies -- the more stuff that blows up, the better.

It's hard enough to find two people who like the same animes...

If that happens... It'd be like an anime!

I'm currently seeing someone who has no interest in anime, but he watches it with me because I'm into it. He even got into Elfen Lied enough to want to finish it. But one series doesn't make a fan, and enough of the other stuff that I was isn't interesting to him. Although, he did enjoy the FMP Fumoffu Rugby episode.

The last guy I dated was already into anime, so we enjoyed showing each other our favorite series'.

Since I'm really into going to cons, anime is actually a big part of my life now. So a lot of people that I meet, get put off by it. They find me attractive and want to date, but I wear my "Im a geek" badge rather prominently. So they realize pretty quickly that we don't have much in common.

I've always liked animation. So when some guys at work told me about some of the shows that they liked I wanted to watch them too. When it comes down to it, a lot of women will enjoy anime that is geared to men as the target audience. But the opposite isn't exactly the same.

My fiance knew what anime was when I first met him.

That was 7 years ago...

Now we don't nesessarily watch the same thing, as he has his own tastes and I have mine, but sometimes we'll watch a few together. He really likes Fruit Basket because of the sillyness that's involved...and watches a select few Sailor Moon episodes because he can't get over how funny some of the episodes are.

But he's a big boy and prefers the 'manly' anime like DBZ and Gundam and stuff like that. I did introduce him to cels though, so he has a few Gundam Wing ones.

Miko likes Cardcaptor Sakura. Tim loves Sonic X, and any mecha shows.

I am trying to encourage my hubby to watch more anime....

Both of us got into Samurai Champloo and RK so much so we watched them over and over again

I've yet to have an other that was into anime. I guess that's what I need to be looking for in a guy - must watch anime.

A male coworker of mine wanted to run this ad for me. "Single pretty female, loves anime, travel, pets and PLAYS VIDEO GAMES!!!"

He doesn't think I'd be single for long with that "resume".

My current boyfriend likes anime. He got me watching Naruto after I watched the first few fansubbs a few years back and hated it it. I love it now!

We watch anime together sometimes, but i am more of a fanatic about it (he doesn't want anything to do with cels, but i am going to get him something from naruto or Bleach sometime soon lol). I got him into Evangelion recently(I can not beleive he hadn't seen that anime!!). ah.. such nerds ~_~ lol

My bf and I are into anime and manga. Thank goodness for that coz we don't have much in common (he's quite the sports jock & I like shopping

) We pretty much enjoy the same kind of animes/manga like RK, Death Note, Bleach, Samurai Champloo etc. It's quite hard to go wrong with popular shounen series. He can understand why I collect cels but thinks I spend too much on them (who doesn't? even I agree with him

I totally agree. My bf complains a lack of series for him and keeps bugging me to introduce gd ones to him. I, on the other hand, get to choose from both shounen and shoujo titles. I think it would kill him to read some of my rather trashy romantic shoujo manga

I started watching anime as a little kid, back before it was even called "Japanimation"

(that offensive little label cropped up later and then disappeared). My favorite shows were Noozles (The Wonderous Koala Blinky) and Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics. I also enjoyed Astroboy, Robotech, Gigantor, Speed Racer and some other shows I cannot recall.

The very first time I ever saw any kind of Japanese animation was on MTV, when I was really young. There was a music video by some musician that featured a montage of clips from various animation. Bugs Bunny and American cartoons were also included, which I recognized. But there were some Japanese cartoons thrown in that I didn't recognize. I'd love to know who that musician was and see that music video again.

The first anime movie/OAV I remember renting from Blockbuster was a subtitled VHS copy of Devil Hunter Yohko. Fortunately, I had the Sci-Fi channel, as well as Bravo, both of which aired anime titles such as Golgo 13, Wicked City, Akira and Venus Wars.

My husband's older than me and was also into anime early on, when it was barely imported into the US. He was the manager of a Movie Trading Co. that I'd frequent for cheap anime. We actually met in the anime section and our first conversation was about Akira. We were mutually stalking one another...

We always watch anime together, we go to tons of conventions together, we do everything together! It's always more fun when you can enjoy a hobby with someone you care about. We have some friends who are in relationships with people who are not into the same things as their partner. We always feel kind of bad when we see these people cruising a convention solo, without their partner. Not that it's required of course, but it can enhance your experience and enjoyment if you're doing what you love with who you love.

I get told the same. Maybe we are just "too picky". hahaha I've told that too. But, I think people who say that just don't understand having high standards.
