What is the purpose of Youtube and other Video websites?

Each 20 min video is around 50mb of transfer! So that's a ton of bandwidth!

How can they make money? I'm completely clueless as to why google would want them?

There could be more than one purpose.

I have no idea. I read an LA Times article that said that if anyone could figure out how they could make money with YouTube it should be Google.

Video sites like YouTube are supposed to attract viewers, but they eat up such a huge amount of bandwidth. I'd be curious to find out how they'll generate revenue in the future.

Well since Google decided to buy Youtube for $1.65 Billion , there must be some profit to be made off it.

A group has come up with a gimmick that supposedly will undo youtube's limitations. It's the ability to share viral videos but peer to peer. That would eliminate bandwidth issues.

Websites make money through advertising. When you hear about popular viral videos on myspace and youtube on legitimate nightly news channels, you cannot buy that kind of publicity. Sponsors eat that stuff up. Advertising is about the only "virtual" way to make money on the internet, short of having a home based business.

It's not so much current profit, but the potential for profit that interests a buyer like Google. It's speculation on something that has quickly become a "brand name." The biggest problem with youtube, besides bandwidth, is copyrights.

They definitely make the big bucks off advertising as Welcome Consumer said. Now if only I had the money to invest as google did...hehe even if I did have the money they bought Youtube with I would have spent it all on cels!!!

Well other sites that put movie trailers and stuff like that online, put a commercial at the beginning of the video. I wouldn't be surprised if you started seeing that sort of thing happen more.

I've wondered about that, especially places like fanfiction.net, with literally THOUSANDS of stories uploaded on it, if not at least a million at this point. But then, they have TONS of ads, some even pop up when you try to click a link :l

And. Interesting deduction. Where did they get them?

I did some brainstorming and I think this is what Google is thinking.

Within 10 years, dvd's will become obsolete. Terabyte hard drives aren't that expensive anymore and will be less so in 10 years. Modern day security systems already use terabyte harddrives.

With the Terabyte hard drives and 50 megabyte per second transfer we will have in 10 years, we can download information and just have everything stored on servers elsewhere.

When ever you want to watch a show, simply put in your personal id and it downloads the movie for 1 viewing and charges your account.

Of course you'll be doing through Youtube, since the brand name is a household name like ebay. Youtube charges their 15% commision to who ever owns the license of the movie.

I see that happening in 10 years. :vict

I thought about ads, but it wouldn't even come close to making a profit for that much transfer.

But until 10 years later. I see youtube losing millions of dollars per year

"Founder Chad Hurley has made waves for hinting that YouTube has plans of sharing revenue with users who create and upload original videos to the site. The statement was given at the World Economic Forum in Davos on 1/26/07.

The new advertising revenue sharing plans might possibly train the way for greater commercial control over content.
Hurley cited that the plan is anticipated to “reward creativity”.

Hurley further said that YouTube is working out the technology and processes involved - both for the rewards system and the video clip advertising system." -source
