I just got back from seeing it. I have rather mixed feelings.
I thought the visuals were great. Everything about the Persians was so lush and intricate. It made for a great contrast with the simple beauty of Sparta. The lighting was also very interesting and really added to the mood.
I was a little disappointed in the storyline though. I found I could predict pretty much everything. It caused me to loose interest towards the end. I just didn't care. I suspect that the comic book story was a lot better and the cutting needed for the movie is what weakened it.

Thanks for pointing for a great contrast with the simple beauty of Sparta out.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

No, actually, the comic was pretty much the same. Aside from the additional scenes with Queen Gorgo vs. the council and Dilios as the narrator. But nothing was left out, per se. Only some additions.graymouser wrote:I just got back from seeing it. I have rather mixed feelings.

It was predictable because it was 300 men against thousands upon thousands of Persians. Of course they were doomed, what could be more predictable than that? It would've been so hokey and unreasonable if they had survived.
I do see what you mean tho. The trailer was not misleading, which is a good thing. But you go in, expecting the movie to some how exceed your already high expectations. And the fact that it does not exceed, but simply meet them, is kind of off-putting. Still a great, solid, amazing movie. But there's an odd paradox that happens when you get what you want and nothing more. If that makes sense...
The movie could have went above and beyond. Still, I loved it to pieces and can't wait to see it again this weekend.
It cost $60 mil to make and made $70 mil in the opening weekend, the 3rd highest opening for a rated R movie, behind the Passion of the Christ and The Matrix: Reloaded.

I like the bugs in the movie Starship Troopers, because they represent an alternative form of intelligence, like me.

I agree with you. While the added scenes didn't really ruin the movie for me, they did take away from the overall experience. I still really enjoyed the movie as it was a great representation of the actual scenes/panels in the comics.Startyde wrote:The representative scenes from the graphic novel were great, but the "added" scenes involving the queen were both unecessary and ultimately ruined the movie for me. Another example of hollywood taking things too far.
I hope that they will have a DVD release with an edited version where those added scenes are cut. I'll still definently get the DVD when it comes out, but I think that would be a cool version to add with the DVD

I didn't mean that part.
As it turns out I almost never watch TV. Heros is the only show I watch and its the first TV show I've followed since I was an undergrad (1984-88 ) I never saw the trailer on TV. I did catch part of the trailer in a preview before watching another movie though. I really didn't have any huge expectations. I like movies with a lot of action and it looked like there was going to be plenty of that. Like I said, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either.

I just meant the parts about the goat trail, the hunchback's betrayal, the queen's actions, the son dying in front of his father, the spear being thrown at the Persian king, etc. I realize that in the comic it would have been easier to surprise the reader. With the limited time frame of the movie, the set up for each situation was obvious from the start. It's a limited criticism though. |
