Antivirus Software.....

Post by Goldknight »

What do y'all use? I'm fed up with Norton. It takes forever for my computer to start with it, I get error messages about it, it tells me not to use Firefox and instead to use Internet Explorer, etc....the list goes on. I hate it. It isn't just one computer it does this. Does it on both of mine. It turns off the virus protect after being on Firefox for a bit. Takes up too much memory. I could go on and on because of how angry I am. Instead of Norton what have y'all found that works well? I know there's quite a few out there. The other big name of course being McAfee. Not familiar with it. I'm also aware there are a bunch of smaller names that some people are very happy with.

I'm open to any ideas on new software. :bwall :bwall :bwall :bwall :bwall

Why do you dislike it so much?

Norton is practically malware in how your computer performs after installation. Not that McAffee is much better. They both actively scan everything unless you change the settings, pluss they tend to insatall multiple other "security items" as of late, aka bloated software. Nothing like the fun of running 2 or 3 firewall apps on one system if you want to have some fun -_-!

I'd reccomend keeping up on OS updates, using a mail service like gmail with good filtering, and just minimizing your risks(carefull what executables you DL & run). Also for Browsing, Firefox has some really good blocking add-ons that work great.

Also, antivirus software really has seemed to lag behind when it comes to malware/adware risks.

Just my 2 cents.

McAfee wasn't that special either. Just like Norton, but a cheaper price.

I use Norton, but, I don't use my computer for most of the functions that you probably use yours for. For what I use my system for, Norton doesn't bother me.

I use AVG Free from Grisoft. Very easy to use and not processor intensive. Updated daily.

I use McAfee. I've never had any problems with it. When I first installed it, I set up all the parameters for updates how I wanted. We're like a well oiled machine now.

Hi GoldKnight! ^_^ :D

*coughs at chat last night* ;)

I highly recommend Kaspersky Anti-Virus. I was introduced to them about 2 years ago and they have been great. I haven't experienced any slow-downs with my computer at all, especially since I run real high-memory programs such as Paint Shop Pro, AIM, and other programs.

They have a free virus scan you can use to test it out here: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

And if you are satisfied, just go to http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/trial-versions.php to try out one of their trials to get a feel for it before you buy it.

They are a little lesser-known than McAfee or Norton Anti-virus, but all the computer geeks that I hang out with (I consider myself a computer nerd) highly recommend the program.

I hope this information helps! :) *glomp*

We just switched both companies over to NOD 32 and it is wonderful. Quick scans and frequent updates. It is highly recommended with a lot of the web reviewers and becoming more available and common. With NO CONFLICTS and NO PROBLEMS on 14 machines in two months I am sold.

We've tried both McAfee and Norton and found both programs to be resource hogs, as well as very intrusive. Beyond that, they are a bit overpriced. We currently use Computer Associates because it's free with SBC DSL. However, according to a few sources, including Consumer Reports, avast! 4 Home Edition is a good program with low resource use and the best price of all: free with free updates.
