Backgrounds

Post by dave_fanel »

Hi all,

I was just wondering what you do when you don't have the original background to a cel, but you want a copy of it.

Generally I ask a person and for a small fee (for color copying) and shipping, they'll send it to you. That is how I got quite a few copy matching backgrounds, by finding those that have them and asking them. It depends on what series you collect also.

There is a big Sailor Moon collector that houses most of the backgrounds I need (and generally has a lot of cels for sale too! :)), and she's been very kind in letting me get copies of her backgrounds for my cels that closely relate to hers. If it is a big series that people generally collect from, then finding those with matching backgrounds won't be so hard. But if it's from a smaller series, I would look on Ebay or YJ and search for animation backgrounds, and see if any of those might match up.

I've been able to snag a few original backgrounds from YJ and Ebay that went with my cels. But you do have to have patience if you go this route...you might have to wait a while until the background you like or want shows up.

Or, if you go to Rubberslug here: http://www.rubberslug.com/resource/mod_sharebg.aspx you may be able to find some backgrounds that suit your needs. You will need to print them out yourself, and I find that unless you take it to FedEx/Kinko's on a zip drive, the 8.5x11 printout won't be big enough. Most people who share backgrounds are quite friendly if you talk to them or if you use their backgrounds.
Hope this helps! :) Happy hunting! :D

Some cel owners choose to make their own backgrounds, at least for display purpose.s Others choose to get a fan-made copy of the background, especially if they want to frame that particular cel.

I tend to buy a lot of backgrounds on Yahoo Japan. They're relatively inexpensive and some of the artwork is quite impressive. My personal favorite that I own is one of sunflowers due to the amount of brushstrokes in making that fantastic background.

If you do go the RS shared gallery background route, I'd try contacting the owner of the background directly as some scanners may not pick up certain colors as well as a color printer at Kinko's would.

Should you see any backgrounds in the RS gallery with my moniker on them, e-mail me and I'll be more than happy to make you a copy.

a few collectors also use screen grabs as temporary backgrounds. i can't remember the software to use (anyone?) but it seems to be the cheaper route... good luck!!
