Have you ever purchased a cel from a show you've never seen?
Have you ever purchased a cel from a show you've never seen?
Hi folks,
I'm not sure if this question has ever been asked in one of these forums before. Being a cel collector for almost 20 years, I know that I started buying cels from shows I've never seen or heard of. My very first cel I ever purchased was a cool looking mecha robot from an obscure anime show called Le Deus. I had no idea where it was from or which artist worked on it, but I thought it one very cool looking cel that appealed to my artistic sense. Another cel I purchased early on without seeing the anime first was from the classic movie, "Angel's Egg" (which is now one of my favorite anime of all time). I could not resist the absolute beauty and ethereal quality of the image. Since then, I've on occasion purchased other cels from shows that I didn't see at first (and saw later), such as Cowboy Bebop, Nadia, and Tenshi Ni Narumon. For me, collecting cels is more than just character appeal from a favorite TV show, OVA or movie; it's much more aesthetic for me.
So, how many of you have purchased a cel simply because of it's aesthetic appeal without knowing anything about it? Any of these cels are your favorites? And would you care to show your favorite "unknown" cel?

I have only done this once...after asking another beta member multiple questions about the series before the purchase. Then I watched the series immediately afterward and now have a large section in my gallery.
Since I tend to purchase characters I really like, it's hard to do that if you don't know anything about the series.

yup, not often though.

Still not sure where it's from.

Have since seen the show and it def. wasn't the greatest. But I still love the cel.

Re: Have you ever purchased a cel from a show you've never s
I've bought them a few times, but nearly all of them are from the Mandarake store bargain bin and I don't know where they are from. A couple that weren't though:profatomo wrote:So, how many of you have purchased a cel simply because of it's aesthetic appeal without knowing anything about it?
#1. The cheap Iczelion cel I bought nearly ten years ago (no scan of it). That was my third cel and I bought it from "Anime Something or other". Forgot the name of the place. I bought it only for how it looked. It's a low quality cel, but I was excited to buy nearly anything at the time.
#2. I bought this cel from YJ. Have no idea where it's from. I only bought it because of how it looks:

Not really. I only like the #2. cel much.Any of these cels are your favorites?

I don't like buying cels from anime I haven't seen. Sometimes when I saw a cel I liked I would try to watch the anime. Usually I didn't like the anime enough to buy a cel from it.
Knowing how much I like an anime the cel comes from is pretty critical to me. I rarely buy artwork strictly because of aesthetic appeal.

Don't ask me why, and I've heard the show sucked like a hoover on steroids, but I like the cel.
I have a thing for white haired guys it seems
But it's no where near my favourite

Very rarely. It's one way for me to somewhat control the size of my collection. If I do, it's usually because I found them pretty cheap.
I bought this Rubette from Gokudo before I saw the show. But now, Gokudo is 20% of my collection.
Minimum Nanonic is a video game that I've never seen, but I picked up this cel cheap on ebay.
Reiko from Platinum Hugen Ordian was purchased from the Mandarake bargain bin.
This trio of Suchi Pai cels was a lot on YJ.
And I still have no idea where this cel is from.

I'm guilty, I have a bunch of cels and sketches for series I haven't seen. 99% of them were cheap, and I liked the art, so I bought them. About half of which I have the dvds or episodes for, which means I will eventually get around to watching the show. I definitely have cut down on this habit a bit in recent times though.
The one unknown I'm most interested in finding an ID to is this unknown girl.

Eh, the image isn't loading, so it's going to remain unknown.kymaera wrote:And I still have no idea where this cel is from.

Guess I am one of the few then... I have not bought any production art from a series that I have not seen before. I was once very tempted to buy a cel on ebay a few months back (dont remember the series name) mainly because the cel was really nice and dirt cheap but in the end decided not to. When I thought about it I realized that I collect cels/sketches first and foremost because I greatly like the characters or series and second the art.

I've purchased many cels from animes I've never seen. Mikan Enikki, Go! Go! Ackman, and Little Women 2: Nan and Teacher Jo are to name a few that I have collected. I eventually found a copy of the Ackman OAV to watch and purchased the R2 dvd set of Mikan Enikki a while back so now I can finally get a chance to watch the series I'm so obsessed about already, lol. I hope to find dvds of Little Women 2 sometime in the future.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
