SMJ has baffled me.

I sent this e-mail off this morning:

Hello, this is user Sletia.
Today I received my package in the mail. To my shock it was in a huge box big enough to fit a DVD player in. Upon opening and diving through all the packing peanuts, I took out a nice flat cardboard package that held my order: one animation cel. That cardboard package would have sufficed. Why did your company waste supplies and money (its size alone must have cost me extra for shipping!) to send me a single animation cel?! Now I have a huge box to deal with filled with those peanuts that get everywhere in my home. (Space for recycling is limited).
Next time, please just send it in a nice flat thick cardboard package, instead of a giant box. Thanks.

I've had a couple of cels sent this way as well. I think it's funny

Although, I'm not very popular in my household when it happens. The cutting the card, the bits all over the carpet, using up a whole bin liner...

I would rather have this problem then not having enough protection and the cel get damaged.

I agree too. I'd rather have extra protection than none at all. Think about how disappointed you'd be if you found your cel in a flimsy envelope shoved into a mailbox. Rather be safe than sorry.

Artwork is not something that should be handled lightly, no matter if it's just one or a whole lot of them.

There's a seller on eBay who always sends cels in just a plain envelope. No cardboard backing, no box, nothing. I was fortunate and my cels were never damaged but I told him on more than one occasion to please pack the cels better. My most recent purchase from him was wrapped in cardboard but it arrived already open.

What the hell...

I can imagine the number of emails SMJ receives from concerned buyers, asking for secure packing. Considering the cel has to travel from SMJ in Japan to their office in the USA and then it's shipped to your house. That's a lot of travel time.

To contend with packing peanuts, I stretch a long strip of packing tape to "pick" them up off the floor. It acts as a sort of packing peanut fly strip, hehe.

I cam sympathise with that. To make matters worse, the seller/collector claimed that it wasn't even their problem as they had asked the post office clerk for something stronger but weren't given anything. I've had cels shipped in those cardboard EMS boxes before which are great. Surely one can at least ask for one of those and just cover it over in brown packing paper to send by regular airmail. Maybe it's just me but I have tons of cardboard lying around for emergencies so surely it can't be that hard to find some spare cardboard, even if it's from a recycling bin.

This actually happened twice with the same seller. I was lucky enough the first time to not have any damage but the second time, a corner was bent along with the post man folding it over in two to get it through the letter box. Luckily there was no cracking and no bending on the paint areas but when I pay a three figure sum for a cel, I don't expect it to arrive in such an appauling condition. Even if it was cheaper, I'd still be annoyed I think. It just amazes me how some people can think that a cel won't be damaged (especially when it's crossing an ocean) by sending it with no protection other than a flimsy envelope.

Sorry for going off on a tangent and rant aside, I think I know what you're talking about Sletia as I've had two packages shipped this way recently. Both cost me about $30-$35 from Japan by EMS. One package was for two or three cels but these cels I spent alot on so I wasn't too worried about the high shipping charge. I always request EMS anyway so I can never usually get it for less than $25 and so $35 wasn't a big deal to me. Maybe next time you could request in the shipping instructions box for them to use less packaging and just cardboard backing? I must say I was happy with them using this "overpacking" method as I could be reassured that future purchases would arrive safely. I get extra worried about those expensive purchases. ^_^;
