Heh. This has happened to me, too. The cel ... no bag ... wrapped in bubble wrap and put inside a plain US post envelope w/o any sort of cardboard backing or support.

Just a couple of days ago, I had a cel arrive in a similar manner -- inside a bag, with one flimsy piece of cardboard backing, inside a US Priority Mail envelope, and that whole contraption stuffed inside a manilla envelope.

In each case, the cels arrived safely and undamaged, by some miracle. Luckily for me, my mail carrier is well-acquainted with my nutty collecting habits. Anytime I get a flattened envelope or Priority Mail package, she brings it to my door, instead of trying to fold it and put it in the mailbox. I was also lucky that they were shipments within the US only ... it would scare me to death to think about a cel traveling to or from Europe or Japan like that. (eeek!)

What, Nick only used one box???? I usually end my shipping requests with something like extra cardboard appreciated or something. Seriously, I don't mind paying a bit more for shipping, not when a single postal issue can easily ruin a pile of expensive cels all at the same time.

Insurance is small consolation when you know it was a one of a kind item that will not come around a second time.

I will admit that it does seem like an overkill... but I don't mind the extra packing b/c as others have stated: Making sure our beauties don't get damanged is a very good thing... Insurance doesn't cover the disspointment/anger/frustration of loosing a precious piece of art work. But I also don't mind the extra packaging b/c I save it and I use it when I sell stuff myself on ebay. The boxes usually get broken down and recycled, but the packing peanuts and such definately get reused. ^_^

I'm all for extra packing, but those peanuts are torture. In order to recycle them, I have to drive across town to the recycle center, since we're not allowed to put packing peanuts in with the stuff that gets picked up at the street.

I love that my cels are so well packaged. I usually wait until I have lots to ship so it is worth it, and so I don't keep annoyed with 2 boxes for 1 cel. I love it how there is a bit of cardboard packed on top of everything so that my scissors don't go through to the artwork when I rip open my box.

i must admit i didlike the new packing smj has been doing - peanuts?! grr. they get everywhere and i haven't a clue where to recycle them. it's such a waste.

i also remember when they used to send cels in those bulk boxes (one rate regardless of weight) and those were packaged good and never damaged (for me) so i get a bit miffed when the same amount of cels come in a jumbo box.

but at least my cat really digs the boxes....

That's crazy! I had a cel arrive a few weeks ago no cel bag, in a document mail envelope inside a bubble wrap brown envelope and that was it. Easily could of scratched up inside that document envelope and very easily could of been bend. I wasn't to happy when I opened the package but I was glad that nothing happend to the cel itself during the travel. But you live overseas which makes it a longer traveltime and going through customs and all which is scary. I don't understand why they couldn't make it at least so it wouldnt' be easy to bend.

It was very easy bendable and not having the cel in a cel bag and sliding inside the dcoument envelope could of scratched up the cel. Luckly nothing happend and the cel arrived without any damage, but to send a cel that way is just scary.

Is that your opinion?

I guess some of the most crazy shipping methods I've ever heard remain the cel that was cut to fit the package and the cel that was mutiple folded so that it could fit into the small envelope. o_O;

My most fun experience is the large pan sketch I bought that was shipped in a large size thin bubble envelope and nothing else. :wow:

I definitely would not complain about a package being over-packed. I have been fortunate SO FAR to not have received any packages with damaged cels. But, I definitely feel everyone's heartaches when their wonderful artwork comes in damaged.

I just got a package of doujinshi, and it was in a rather large box, filled with packing peanuts and bubble wrap. Took awhile to get it all out but I wasn't angry or annoyed.

With cels, though, it's kind of a guessing game, because there's always a few cardboard mailers in there, and I sometimes have to cut them ALL open before I find the cel :^^:
