Me too. I am having an "out-of-money" experience.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Thinking about it, I have to agree with what alot of
others have said here. Sai from Hikaru No Go can
be hard to come by. I swear it is either feast or famine
with him, so.......I tend to take what I can get where he
is concerned. With most of the other series I collect,
I would definately say quality over quantity.
Then there are characters like Kyuuzo from Samurai 7.
I would love to collect anything of him, however, there
is nothing to be had, so how can you take quality in a
case like that?? Just give me something.............PLEASE!!

No, no people, this is slowly going the wrong way.
I'm not implying it should be quality or nothing.
I never said that actually.
I was just wondering what people prefer.
My question was simple really, it has nothing to do with what people consider quality because quality is in the eye of the beholder.
It also has nothing to do with loving your collection or not, I know people love their cels otherwise they wouldn't have bought them in the first place.
I used the term 'quality cel' only as a reference to those cels you find expensive. For some $ 50.- is expensive, for others $ 1500.- is expensive, I can't be the judge of that.
But that was not what I asked. My question was:
Would you rather save your money and buy that (again..for instance!) $ 800.- cel that makes your jaw hit the floor each time you see it.
Or would you rather buy 8 cels for a $ 100.- each because you prefer to own more cels.
Either way, your expenses are the same, the only difference is the amount of cels that are going to be in your gallery.
That's it really.

I would go with the Quality.
I used to buy every cel I saw just because I could afford it. But now, I sold them all because I didnt really love them.
So now, I want to save and spend $xx.xx amounts on one shot that really would send me into a frenzy.
Something I would truely love.
All the cels that are in my gallery now are the remaining ones that I truely love.
Slowly but surely I hope to add more with the "Quality" approach lol

I wish I could say one way or the other. I have cels that cost $30 that take my breath away as easily as a cel costing 10 or 20 times as much. I would prefer that all my cels cost $30 but realistically that isn't going to happen. So do I wait for that special 1k+ cel or pick up a couple of nice bargain cels under $50? To be honest I don't know, I strike when the mood and the pocket allows. I don't let losing bother me, because amazingly enough I'm able to get along with out it and move on to the next auction or sale.
So...I'm not sure, did I answer your question Wendy?

I agree with what some people are saying. Its not just money that determines which (quality vs quantity) you buy. There is also availability. Some shows and characters are so rare that you just snag what you can, when you can.
On the financial end, so much depends on the show itself. There are some shows where you can get very high quality cels for less than $50. There are other shows that you can't even get a nice cel (let alone a high quality one) for less than $1000. The collector from the less expensive show is going to be able to collect a large quantity of high quality cels very quickly. The collector of the expensive show may never attain high quality nor high quantity cels.
A good example is to compare my Boku no Sexual Harassment cels to my Last Unicorn cels. The BNSH cels are mainly classic portrait cels with matching production backgrounds, yet the entire section is still less than half the cost of the cheapest/lowest quality LU cel I ever bought. I have since sold that LU cel, but it had a very small off center image and certainly no BG. My LU collection will never match the quality of my BNSH cels no matter how long I collect or how much I spend. I guess what I mean is that sometimes its not a matter of choice between the two options. I suspect most people would want both quality and quantity.
I also think that the average collector who goes for the average priced show will eventually have both. Those who choose to have fewer cels of higher quality will still increase their quantity over time. For those who collect quantity, eventually the number of cels is going to be large enough that they will want to trim it down. Which ones will they keep? Probably the higher quality cels. Over time they will also end up with both. Umm, am I making any sense?
I know that my pattern was very similar to other collectors. I started off buying any cel of my favorite character/show that I could find. Over time I started to change to preferring the higher quality cels. In my collection its easy to see which shows I collected from early on and which ones were added later. Early shows have a lot of average quality cels. Later shows are almost all quality (as least in my eyes). I'm getting to the point now where I am going back and slowly replacing the average quality cels from the earlier shows with higher quality ones.
I guess I'm not really good at answering this question since I see collecting as being more complicated than just deciding on quality vs quantity. ****OK, but the short answer is quality****

I'm trying to reduce things in my life so I'm all about quality. I don't have time or space for quantity anymore.
I have a couple of Furuba's going to the grave with me.

Add me to that batch who won't let that happen.miz ducky wrote:but only when it comes to Fruits Basket. I would honestly like to own every piece of Fruits Basket that is in existence. There are enough of you here that won't let that happen

Since the start of the new year, I have been poring over my collection and weeding it out series by series. I used to be of the I WANT IT ALL!!! MINE!!! camp, and I'm slowing toning it down to a system similar to glorff's. But I'll have more than three tiers.
So yes, as a result, I have found myself buying cels at prices I NEVER would have considered even last year and I'm buying less often. Like you said, Wendy, the financial part all balances out in the end, but I'm not buying half as many cels as I did when I first started.
However, if I see anything from Full Metal Panic....
I WANT IT ALL!!! MINE MINE MINE!!!
