Question about OP cels

Are cels which are used in an actual episode and the opening really OP cels? Or are OP cels the ones that are specifically drawn and used for the openings only?

that's a good question, since in hxh theres shots of kuroro orchestrating the masacre in the 2nd op credits as well as one of the episodes.

So..Op cels used in OP scenes, but also in non-OP scenes are not really Op cels? Or they are, but only half, because they're also used in the series?

I would say the ones that are specifically drawn or created for the Opening sequence to be considered an "OP" cel.

That is a weird question. I think any cel that is shown in the OP credits, regardless of whether or not they are in an episode some time in the series should be considered OP cels. Afterall, the opening is the first thing you see in a series.

I think any cel or sketch used in the OP credits should count as an "opening" cel/sketch. Some shows use only scenes from the anime in their openings ... so, if a cel/sketch had to be drawn specifically for the opening in order to count as "opening" ... then those shows wouldn't even have opening cels/sketches at all.

Did that even make sense? I think I just confused myself. This is what happens when I don't get enough sleep for several nights in a row.

Plus, how many times can I possibly use the word "opening" in one post, anyhow?

When I look at my layouts... The top will say OP when it's an op cel... and when it's used in the anime... it would have for example. cut. 267

Would they really make two sets of cels though, one for the opening, and one for the episode use? It would seem kind of silly to do so.

I've got an ending cel... that was used in over a dozen promotional items/merchandise that I know of (stationary sets, calendars, multiple trading cards, software, posters,etc)... does that make it a hanken, or ending?

How about cels from the middle of an episode that ended up being used on trading cards, are those hanken too?

Or eyecatch cels that end up on pencil boards and trading cards?

There are lots of grey areas ^^;

Cels from episodes that are used on trading cards seem to me as just screencaptures. Though I have the same instance on a few of my cels that I used to own or do now - I had one cel that had been printed in a cd jacket for example.

It's probably cheaper to pull images already created inside a series to use for promotional uses. I would consider hankens to only be images that are created outside of a series, specifically made for promotional or commercial use. Or "non-animation".

I'd probably tend to agree with Ryouko and say that it's only an OP cel if it was made specifically for the opening and not just a scene from the series. Perhaps we need to coin a new term for cels from episodes used in the OP. Hmm...Sorta Opening For This cel or S.O.F.T cel for short since your love for it might be tainted by the fact that it's not a formal OP cel.

I have an OP cel that was used in 2 episodes as well as the opening credits.

It's definitely an OP cel! The scene was just repeated in each episode. You see the cel first in the OP.

So I guess in answer to your question, an OP is an OP is an OP no matter what.

I also have an ED that was used in an episode.

There are many series that make their OPs and EDs from the episodes. I still consider those cels/sketches OPs/EDs because simply put . . . they appear in the OPs/EDs.

Oh, I definately think if an OP cel is used elsewhere in an episode, it's still an OP cel.

I'm not sure how it was understood that I thought otherwise. o.o

One of my Tron cels from Violinist of Hameln was used both in the OP and an Episode, I believe.
