Both :P
I love quality shots and the lower prices, though I suppose that I can't always have it that way. If I had to honestly choose between a really nice shot from a series versus several smaller lesser quality shots, I'd take the single item, but luckily I collect from enough less popular shows, that I can get it both ways some of the time

I've focused on the more expensive cels since I started collecting. The first few cels that I purchased were on the high-end. At the time, I was still interested in completing the missing few promo cards in my Sailormoon card collection, and reasoned that by buying these high end cels, that I'd only need a few of them and could dedicate the rest of my resources to buying cards.

But, oh, how times change. And they probably will change again.

I have no problem with paying money for a cel that just takes my breath away. But I've reached the point that I won't buy just any quality or emotional shot, it has to be an incredibly detailed shot and generally with a matching production background. Because of this, the amount of cels that I've purchased in the last six months or so is very small, and some of these cels are from animes I don't actively collect.

There are other shows that you can't even get a nice cel (let alone a high quality one) for less than $1000. The collector from the less expensive show is going to be able to collect a large quantity of high quality cels very quickly. The collector of the expensive show may never attain high quality nor high quantity cels.
I agree with the first part of this statement. Shows that have a widespread following, especially outside of Japan, tend to go for more than those that do. However, regardless of the anime, there tends to be a loyal group that will only buy the primo cels and will pay top dollar and because of that, the quality of the supply will be greatly diminished, even if the prices aren't.

I've been collecting cels for quite a while, I guess (since 1995 or so). Funny thing is, it never was a quantity thing. Usually, a cel had to strike me somehow before I would buy it. Maybe it's not always the quality others would agree with, but it's something that pleases me. Over time, it's just become a huge mass of cells. Huge to me, anyway.

While I'm on a bit of a breather from collecting cels - I don't think I've bought any new ones in over a year - I'm still on the lookout for great cels that really strike me. I keep an eye out for certain series, and I'm looking forward to Otakon for a cel hunting adventure. So I guess it's pretty much a quality thing these days.

Then again, I have no interest in selling off my second and third rate cels just now. They remind me of what I'm really looking for.

Thanks, keropi. I imagine I lurk more than I post. And yes, things are fine here. It's warm and sunny in Virginia. Well, it would be if it were daytime.

I think that most collectors would definitely do quality over quantity, but the fact of the matter is that we often can't afford quality. Try buying some "A" quality Miyazaki cels: most are over $1K! So, there is definitely a balance involved: budget versus quality; selling some of your lesser cels to be able to afford better ones. In the past, I bought alot of B and C grade cels because they were cheap and what I could afford, but the few A quality cels that I have are the ones that I look at over and over again. Nowadays, I try my best to concentrate on the best quality cels I can afford, but once in a while, I'll see a group of cels at a such ridiculously low price that it's simply too good to pass up. Also, it's hard to pass up a mediocre cel from a extremely rare anime show...you just don't see them very often, if at all. And as many have said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are some B and C grade cels that make me just as happy as some of my grade A cels!

Do you see them very often if at all? I see a computer nerd.

Gotta say, I'm usually one for quality, although I am willing to compromise when it's a sequence or episode I really like and no good cels are available from it. Nowadays before I buy any moderately expensive cel I ask myself - would I be happy to frame this? If the answer is 'no', I'll generally just leave it. My long term goal is to have a really gorgeous wall of my favourite cels, and I try to keep that goal in mind before I spend my money on less quality pieces.
