Cel with some sort of film background??? Help please??

Post by eddiefb3 »

I finally got a cel of Daisaku Kusama from Giant Robo.

http://revolution.rubberslug.com/galler ... mID=208520

Its a Cool cel, but it is really weird features on it.

It doesnt have a sketch, not all that weird.

But for 1 The back layer A11 the number almost looks like it was painted on with the same paint that was used on that layer.

Where as Daisaku on the front layer has a red marker number.

But the weirdest thing of all is the back layer.

What would seem to be a third layer. It is dark and almost looks like film. But you cant see through it. Maybe its some kind of background.

But there is no paint on it. It is however taped on with the cel. So i am sure its suppose to be there.

It does have a number on it as well, but as you can see in the picture its on top and centered.and thats the only area where its not dark but clear.

Its even got production holes.

Can anyone tell me what this is????

Hold it up to a strong light and see if light comes thru. If it does it is a special effects layer where they used light to change the background. Older anime use a lot of flashing / changing lights to stretch the time a cel can stay on screen. 8)

I thought it might be something like that, but the light doesnt come through at all.

If anything it blocks light.

How?

1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Maybe it is just a cheap way to do backgrounds that don't have anything going on or don't matter. A roll of that stuff couldn't cost as much as having someone paint one. :?

It's similar to my Sesshoumaru cel where the black BG is the acetate/ film layer:

This is to produce special effects, in this case sparks where the swords collide. In your case, it's likely something in the water. Best way is to get a screencap and then you can tell exactly what was the special effects :)
