Exciting prospects- what gets your blood pumping?

Post by Krafty »

The thing that excites me most about collecting anime art is seeing something suddenly come up for sale that I've been hoping to see for so long. More precisely, it is the prospect that the artwork is within my grasp.

This happened the other week when a seller posted a lot of art from an anime I love. Now, I've known the seller for several years and I'd check out his emails with the latest listings but nothing caught my eye. Things had been quiet over the last couple of years- until now.

He's been listing artwork from the prequel series of this particular anime- something I've NEVER seen for sale before, not on YJ or another dealers site. It's a CG series so it's BGs and pencil work only. As this is one of my faves, you can imagine how extatic I was!
Moreso when he said he'd offer the whole of his stash to me- 300 cels [from the older series], 1000 BGs and 5000 douga/genga. WOW.
In honesty, I can't afford them but will cherry pick some to begin this new collection.

So, I know it's been discussed before some time ago but I wonder if responses have changed and people have different priorities- in this hobby, what does it take for your face to light up with joy/excitement?

Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...

More recently it was the Kite cel of Sawa I just purchased.

But just yesterday I was browsing YJ and i saw two Transformers cels that made my heart skip a beat. I'd have no chance of being able to afford them, but for that one split second I could see them in my collection.

Hmm...let me see.

***tries to recall the last times he was filled with joy***

1. When a lot of quality material shows up at the same time. Four or five years ago a seller posted about nine YJ auctions from To Heart with two background cels per auction. It was great fun planning bidding strategy and backup plans.

2. When I get home from work, check the computer and see that I won an auction I never thought I would and I win it for less than 30 percent of my high bid.

3. When a dealer reveals hidden artwork from shows I would like to collect. That kind of thing stuns the brain and affects my ability to speak.

4. When after years of seeing only mediocre crappy artwork for sale, I finally see high quality artwork from a series for the first time. That might get the heart racing and make my eyes pop out of my head. 8O

5. When I see artwork from a series for the first time (so I know the artwork at least exists).

6. Finding artwork of characters I've been trying to get for several years.

7. Finding exact scenes I wanted. Like OMG!!! :jaw

Well really just seeing any art from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind makes me smile. :)

But actually being able to bid on the art fills me up with so much excitement I'm boncing off walls. :jump

The instances when I really feel the "joy" of collecting are when I find a cel from a favorite cartoon that I have watched over and over again as a kid. The second thrill always comes when I finally get that cel in the mail, open the package and can physically touch that cel and feel it in my hands.

Being able to actually own a cel from a beloved animation is not only thrilling in a sentimental way, but it is owning a small part of an amazing era in art history. I see animation as the most demanding, beautiful, reverential and highest art form we have in human civilization. Making a quality animated movie incorporates most other art forms in very demanding ways: writing, drawing, painting, sculpting, filmmaking, acting and most importantly, storytelling.

Animation is the one art form that comes the closest to representing life as humans feel it and see it. It captures the essence of personality and situation and it brings whole new worlds into our hearts and minds. It is the ultimate extension of our imaginations.

I find it especially amazing that this art form has only come about in the last 100 years, so the cels we collect will one day be considered pieces representative of the birth of this art form. This is especially true if you collect early Disney cels or cels from older cartoons.

When I get my hands on a cel that is a perfect representation of one of my favorite characters or of a key part my favorite show's plot/story, an appreciation of all of the above hits me for an instant and it feel like electricity through my veins! It really makes me feel alive and gives me a lot of inspiration for the creation of my own stories and characters as an animation/illustration major!

The biggest thing that gets my blood pumping is when I see a piece of artwork that I have been waiting to find for over 5-9 years. This has actually happened very recently (you can see the update on my site right now).

OK, so, this will probably get some people's blood boiling. I saw an original sketch from 1928, which was valued at $3 million! It was absolutely AMAZING and definitely took my breath away. So, as you see, some of these artworks will really start appreciating in value throughout time.

Any on model Nadia cel auction can do it for me :D

Seeing someone update their Rubberslug with a Nadia cel :)

Finally getting a piece you've always though was out of your league. Everytime I look at cels that I've won like that, I'm filled with wonder and excitement!

A 3 Piece Sketch Set from AIR that I have been eyeing for 4 days. Of course I lost, but for 4 days, I was so excited to think I would be able to get an original artwork from that wonderful series. It gives me hope that there are still pieces slowly being released to the general public.

Ah, for me to get pumped up requires 2 things:
A) someone decides to blow up a big chunk of his/her cel collection on YJ (from the series i collect)
B) i actually have the money to get many of the good ones......

.... Last time both things met each other was about 2 years ago. When only A) happens you call it "total frustration". When only B) happens, which is much more frequent, you call it "keep amasing $$$ for next good time". But if it keeps that way for too long it becomes "Is there still anything out there?". Fortunately, ussually before it arrives that point something decent or even good pops up to save the day. :)
