Surprises in Cel Collecting

Post by Killua »

Today I had a big surprise that shouldn't really have been a surprise. I had puzzled for a while where this cel:

came from, but I didn't really puzzle over it too much. Just figured it was from the Ubogin fight in Hunter X Hunter, looked awesome, and that was enough.

Then today I was rewatching some of the later episodes and noticed a flicker in the second opening that couldn't have been 1/20th of a second that vaguely looked like it was in the same general shape as this cel. Sure enough, when I slowed it down there my beautiful cel was.

I was a little surprised to say the least. I had no idea it was an OP, nor did the person I bought it from (I think).

I've seen that other people have also found out after the fact that a cel they bought was actually an OP or ED cel, or that for some reason it was more valuable than they originally believed, like maybe a killer cel was stashed away in a lot or something. I thought it would be cool if others here had any examples of their own. :) It's neat to find cel treasures in this fashion.

Congrats, that's realli great! It's actually a nice cel on its own, now that it's from the OP, even better :D

That's what I like abt cel collecting, interesting stories like this. So far no hidden surprises for me though (dang!)

2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Yeah, the second OP. Which is kind of cool on its own because I was actually looking at the OP today thinking, "There are barely any cels out from this OP, mostly just one Kuroro sequence, I wish there were more out there." :D

Oh wow! 8O Congrats. Thats a really sweet cel! I enjoy the perspective in it. An it comes with a cool tale to boot. :D

I've had that happen to me only once.

I was watching the Gits openings on youtube and found two Ops i've never seen before and it turned out that my sketch was in used in both of them. :^^: I nearly jumped out of my chair at the realization.

A really sweet cel is a terrible thing to waste.

Yes! That has happened to me too; this layout sketch from the Kamichu opening was buried in a group. What a nice surprise!

Congratulations, Killua. It's a good feeling when a really intense and well-done cel turns out to be special in other ways.

Mine is not nearly as spectacular, though the same idea. I got this not-very-pretty Tennimon cel just because I thought it was silly in this series' over-the-top way. I titled it "More evidence of Noelle's Incredibly Heavy Butt" and put it in a gallery alongside another cels that I already had featuring this character's rather impressive backside.

Then the next time I was looking at the OP, a "flicker" like yours caught my eye, and I went back to review one scene, frame by frame. And indeed ... an OP cel. (Though admittedly not nearly as handsome as yours!)

I don't get very many surprises since I don't usually look through my sketches after I get them. lol :D

But I was surprised when I got this freebie background Doukyuusei cel that was placed on the backside of the background cel I purchased it for:

Considering it's a freebie, I think it's fairly decent. I rarely get cels/sketches with only a guy showing in the frame, but I liked it enough to post it in the gallery.

Well, congratulations a-plenty! I had that happen once with a cel from Photon... always amusing to our significant others, I'm sure, to hear the audible SQUEAK when we figure it out. :D
He who dies with the biggest mech... obviously needed a bigger mech.
