When you *think* you've won, but actually haven't...

Post by sugarcels »

Have you ever bid on a cel, honestly believing you've won, then come to find that you, in fact, were the loser? Did the same name (the bidding service you used) throw you off? Did you sniper bid and not check until hours later?

I recently thought that I had won a Pokemon cel off Y!J. There was about 5 hours left when I bid. When I came to check in the morning, it showed the same name as the bidder. There were 2 bids, but it had not changed the original price, and wasn't over my proxy bid. So I was confused when I did not get a congrats email. I checked with the service, and they claim I lost? How is that so?

Honestly, I'm heartbroken :( Since early yesterday I believed it was mine, and got attached to it.

Someone outbid you internally. They'll get charged an internal bidwar fee, but I can understand how you would be confused and upset. It has happened to me more times than I care to count...

...although it is nice when this happens are you ARE the winner! :)

Awww that doubly sucks hon
/sry
I'm sorry that happened to you. :O X|

Something similar happens on Mandarake
too (only you dont see it for a few hrs or day)
On 2-3 occassions I've placed a bid and
watch the auction end only for the price to stay the same
when I had my window open.
Assuming I won, I go back a few days later to pay
and notice an extra "star" and a 100 increment.
It seems sometimes it lags if theres
alot of activity going on in that hour or their system
is farting.
blah! :x :P

Depending on the deputy service you use , you should have recieved an email stating you were outbid by another deputy user ID.

I know I have recieved such email from Rinkya in the past.
"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

I HATE when that happens! That happened to me on Rinkya as well. But, that bidder sniped me on the last 30 seconds of the auction while I was watching it! so, I was all excited and everything, and then read the "Outbid" notice in the e-mail when I went to go pay.

It is for the better anyway. At least you now have more $$ to buy something you will like more later.

Yeah, I hope this means my "cel karma" is building up, and I find something better soon :)

Sigh.. I was just so happy. I didn't get an outbid email, and I don't get it, because it only showed TWO bids, neither of which showed that it went over my proxy *argh and cry* It didn't even go up in price! What's up with that?

If the other bidder is using the same deputy, the winning bid amount on YJ does not increase. YJ reads the second bid by the same deputy as someone just increasing their maximum bid at the last minute. YJ also does not reset the clock. If the other bid is in the last few seconds, there is not enough time to respond to an email notice.

Rinkya will usually charge an additional fee to the second bidder so they will pay more that what is shown on the YJ auction. Still, the second bidder will probably pay less than what your maximum bid would have been had you had the chance to bid again.

Personally, I dislike sniping. It violates my sense of fair play. Unfortunately, many people feel differently and it will probably always be a part of ebay and some deputy YJ auctions. The most you can do is expect it and be prepared.

i am sorry to hear this. :( this is why i do not believe in last minute bidding. i personally prefer to lay out all my cash during my original bid. this way, if i lose, its for an amount that i cannot not pay anyways. as for internal bid wars, i still dont understand how those work. they dont seem to be very... logical? :/

Only just? I'm not sure if I would like to lay out all my cash during my original bid on an item. What's it like?

To prevent this, you need to refresh the page at the end of the auction, waiting to see if the number of bids goes up. If the bid count rises, and the price doesn't, that means that someone using your deputy has beaten your bid.

I personally don't snip fellow deputy members . . . I don't have the guts. :P

The TIME for the last bid using your deputy name will update too.

(At least it does for me)

I'm desuaded to bid against other deputy users if it happens to be Rinkya simply because the 'cel sale' commission price of $7 becomes void and overall costs soar.
Half the time I play fair and bid well in advance, on other occasions, if the art is particularly special, I'll do whatever I can to win- snipe and use 'interesting' increments.

But to address Sugar's initial point, being outbid at the last moment happen fairly often and it's a sickening feeling. So, I'm sorry you had to go through this, Sugar.
I remember a batch of cels came up and I was outbid on all 6 YJ auctions within the space of 20mins; very frustrating. That user was a deputy too so I just have to monitor the RS gallery updates and bomb the culprit LOL!
Out of the gloom a voice said unto me;
"Smile and be happy, things could be worse".
So I smiled and was happy
and behold;
things did get worse...

It can be really dangerous to do internal bidding. There's a temptation to just bid your max if it's after the 5 minute mark and you don't think anybody outside of your deputy will bid anymore. However, if you outbid someone's max, that person could go to another deputy and bid up right underneath your max, meaning you lose a chunk of change.
