Are you satisfied with your collection?

Post by cutiebunny »

This is something I've always wondered about other collectors, as well as myself. Why do we drive ourselves, sometimes to the point of debt, to purchase items? Are we not satisfied with our collection in their current state? Are we purchasing 'wishlist' items or items to tide us over while we patiently wait for that dream cel/sketch/sequence/repro? And for those that are content with what they currently own, are we in the pursuit of more items to further content us and/or are we attempting to collect as much as we possibly can?

So, in short, are you currently satisfied with your collection? If you are, what makes you satisfied with your collection? And, if you're not currently satisfied with your collection, what item(s) would give you that sense of accomplishment?
-----------

For me, it's always a difficult question to evaluate. For the most part, I do enjoy what I own very much, especially after perusing my own gallery. However, there's always that lingering feeling of further satisfaction on the offhand chance that I should win a dream cel. I probably spend far more time than I should looking at cel sites, and since that is the case, perhaps that is the best answer to the question.

I'm not quite sure I can narrow it down to a particular item that would instantly make me satisfied with my collection. But if I were, it would be any of the dream cels on my RS wishlist.

I'm currently very satisfied with what I have, and I feel very fortunate to have found the cels that have come my way. There's still quite a number of FY cels I would shell out a life savings for, but the chances for me to even FIND them are slim to none. Thus, if I were to not buy any more cels in my future, I would remain happy with the way things are right now. ^^

I'll never be truly satisfied until I own every single piece of paper that was used to create the anime Fruits Basket. (singing: Cant get no satisfaction)

Until that day, I think that I will still be driven to buy what is made available to me.
If that day should ever come, I might be inclined to focus my efforts else where, but I doubt it.

LOL!!!!!!!!!! oh man...

I am pretty satisfied with my collection thus far. There has not been alot of buy recently and the few high dollar cels I wanted to buy have to wait now because of vet bills. LOL

There a few cels I am happy that I obtained. These are cels that were one of those "Man I hope I get lucky enough to find that cel" type deals.

Loved this scene in the manga and anime. She looks beautiful.

Closest I will ever get to a close up of winged Tooya

Loved this scene. I wanted something with a background from this scene and this is more than what I could have asked for. :)

I guess that is about it. @_@ I hope to buy more cels but other things are more important right now. ^_^

I'm satisfied.
If you are, what makes you satisfied with your collection?
I am satisfied because:

1. I've been collecting for awhile and I've long moved past the phases of "trying to get everything I want" and "expecting to see something I want".

2. I've looked for stuff from the same series for so long that artwork I see for sale now only falls into these five categories:

--- Series I collect from, but am fairly satified with what I already have. This means I'm unlikely to ever get anything from it again. I've sort of moved on from these series already. There are a lot of fish in the sea.

--- Series I might have wanted to collect from, but because of the high prices I've long given up on even thinking of getting anything from it. I don't even try. There are more affordable series out there. Satisfaction can be gained from going wide and deep.

--- Series I don't like as much, but if I see something noteworthy from it I'll buy it. It's pretty rare when an artwork overcomes my "dislike" level of the series, but it happens sometimes.

--- Series I don't like and have never had an interest in collecting for any reason.

--- Series I've never seen artwork from before. These are usually the only artwork that get me truly excited these days.

3. My pessimism about ever getting artwork from something that I want. This makes me feel satisfied because I'm not thinking of the stuff I don't have and I'm not getting frustrated searching for stuff I can't get. I'm in a continuous search mode, but I'm not searching for anything in particular. I still use specific search links each day, but I don't expect to see anything that I want.

4. I don't have to acquire as much artwork from a series to feel satisfied with what I have from it. "More artwork" is still better "Some artwork", but the difference isn't as big as it used to be.

Now "Some artwork" is WAY,WAY better than "No artwork". "No artwork" just plain sucks. :D

Hmmm, I try to ask myself this constantly to keep myself from buying everything under the sun. I am not completely satisfied with my collection. I am pretty happy with the AnC cels that I have acquired but there are still those few eluding me. I am not buying as much as I used to and that does tell me that I am happy with what I have. Lately I have been buying cels I REALLY want or to upgrade a cel (such as a better shot or background). I don't know. Guess the answer is just no because I agree with Miz Ducky about wanting them all (or at least all I can think of).

Then again, I am sure you can all agree, it is hard to be satisfied when you collect more than one series and money is pulled thin.

WOW! 8O So I'm going to be the reason buttrflym and miz ducky will never be satisfied. 8O :P

*holds her FB sketches & ANC cels tightly*

I'm very satisfied with my collection. Sure, there are some I'm eyeing that eventually will make their way in my gallery. But if it never happens, that's fine. I have other things in my life to worry about so I won't worry about my hobby.

<-- one happy little camper :)

I'm definitely satisfied with my collection. I'm almost always a glass-half-full kind of person. I've found and been offered many incredible things, and I can't not smile as I look through all the favorite scenes/characters I've collected over time. I don't spend long thinking about what's NOT there.

I also agree very much with what Keropi said, though I would add one more thing on the end for my own collecting habits.... Although my collection is spotted through with plenty of pieces that would be considered "low quality", I have to have access to certain quality level of artwork from a given show, or I simply won't collect from the show at all. If it would be....

1) ....financially impossible for me to buy nice pieces from meaningful scenes or of favorite characters, or.....
2) ....if the artwork from the show in question is very scarce to the point that only a few roughs show up here and there, or....
3) ....if the artwork used to be available but can never be found anymore....

... then I honestly am content to admire it from afar and own nothing from the show, as opposed to owning just a couple very low-quality pieces. For me, knowing in advance that I can never have any higher-end pieces from a show seems to cancel out any interest in owning lower-end pieces from it.

There are countless people out there with collections much more valuable than mine, but (even given the opportunity) I wouldn't swap collections with them. The reason I like mine best is because I picked it out and gathered it together myself. ^_^

Many Sharp Smiles,

8O "Gota Catch them all!!!!!!!!" ^_^

I'm with Keropi
I'm in a continuous search mode, but I'm not searching for anything in particular
Am I satisfied with my collection??
YES I am...But if something shows up, then adding it will make it more special....

I mean...technically my dream came true when I got my ultimate wishlist item (I've been on the hunt since I started) and here he is!!!!!!!!!
http://melodymoon.rubberslug.com/galler ... esID=32171
And I got that for X-mas! That makes it more special!!!
-----------------------------------------
I just collect things I find pretty, whether it be expensive or not...Tough I try to avoid expensive items. Since my gallery has "variety" and I don't focus on any one show...I don't focus all my time on one thing, so I am NOT out to get as many of something as I can. If I did...
------------
I do NOT collect sequence mates, since I technically dislike owning sketches/cels that only differ a bit, I just want variety.. I do have sequence mates (X-mas gifts, or something that shows movement in the scene).
I also do not focus on any one show, and If I buy a lot, I'll keep some and may sell the rest...I just don't like many cels/sketches from a series..not sure why...*scratches head*
----------
There is not one piece that would make me satisfied since I already am (But the Op. Tamaki I got made me almost pass out with happiness ^_^)....But I do sometimes find pretty things that help make me happier.
And also, there are always new ANIME coming out, so a wish that seems like a wish now, will look sucky when another anime comes out and you fall more in love with that one..........
------------
there are sometimes cels out there that go for very high, but in my opinion they look ugly/ or the hype is too great. The show is just famous and sketches/cels go for the price of your newborn. But eventually the price goes down. So i rather wait...
------------
my favorite items: (2 & 3 not scanned yet)
1).(Athrun) *link above)
2).Tamaki (op) (OHSHC) *falls over*
3).Edward (ending) (FMA)

There's the saying "The more you have, the more you want".

And that's pretty much applicable to collectors. :D

If I had to stop collecting, I could. I am satisfied enough to stop and be completely happy with what I have right now. I doubt I will ever get everything on my wishlist, and I know that so It doesn't bother me terribly. What makes me satisfied is knowing how lucky I am to have what I have.
But since I don't have to stop anytime soon, I will still long for those wishlist cels and die quietly when I loose the bidding war. :D
