Talking to Newbies: What Was Your First "Wishlist"

Post by sensei »

Thinking about recent threads, I thought it would be nice to have some standard topics dusted off and directed towards the newer faces in this group. This could be a "flaunt" topic, but let's make it more of a "when I was where you are now" discussion.

What was the first purchase (from an auction, website, dealer, con table, etc.) that you truly felt was a "wishlist" purchase? And what did you learn from the experience that you carried with you?

To start:

Image

I thought of this as I was changing my "Featured cel" on my RS home page. I used to use this for a recent addition, but increasingly I've been looking through my old records looking for significant anniversaries. This is a cel that I bought from the old Anime Chaos sales site (now Shopping Mall Japan) on March 9, 2001. It's Sakura dressed as the Prince in the school play version of "Sleeping Beauty" in Episode 42 of Cardcaptor Sakura, still one of my favorite anime episodes of all time.

I was still in my first year of collecting, and had maybe 8 cels. At the time, I was still entranced by the idea of having a cel, any cel, from a series I enjoyed. The idea never had occurred to me that I could ever, ever, have something really impressive, really important, from that episode, that scene, at least for any amount of money that I'd be able to put aside.

Then I happened into the AC site soon after an update, and there this cel was. And while it was much pricier than anything I'd bought before, the price was one I could afford. It really was a revelation to get it, because it made me clean up my act and get a cel book (before this, I'd kept the little stack in my closet, still in their envelopes). And it made me stop and think -- if this is possible -- then what else?

Seven years later -- still dreaming the "possible dream."

Other stories from oldsters like me (or even from newbies still tingling from your first big snag)?

My first real wishlist cel arrived only a couple of weeks ago, thanks to the kindness of a fellow RS/Beta member. I was jumping for joy when she accepted my offer, and am still on cloud 9! :bow

This is a cel of Sasuke from episode 73.

Cels of Sasuke from the Chuunin finals arc to the end of the Invasion of Konoha arc, are very high on my wishlist, and now I have hope that I will someday find more!

Wishes really do come true! :elephant

When I bought this cel, I had just started collecting and didn't even have a wishlist yet. But Weyrlady had a sequence mate that I really admired, so when I saw this on a Japanese dealer's site, I didn't even blink before sending them an e-mail.

But for my first cel purchased that was actually on my physical wishlist...

I'd been staring at this cel for about a year before Asylum Anime finally had a sale price low enough that I could afford her. I never thought in a million years that I would be quick enough on the draw to get a cel I really wanted from a dealer's site, since I never seemed to catch their updates until the next day...

Yeah...not very exciting stories. Those were to come later in my collecting experience. :^^: :D

EDIT:oohhh..it's for newbies..I missed that part ^^;, But I am a newbie at heart so here it is:

Let's see...there's only one character in a series that I really wanted. I hunted him since I began collecting. Sure some items in my gallery say "Wishlist" but they where items that I just found and fell in love with. But I guess the only TRUE wishlist that I have is something that I've been searching since I began collecting...and it's in this section:

http://melodymoon.rubberslug.com/galler ... esID=32171

All of them are true wishlist, and I got them during X-mas...I can't thank the person enough...here I've been searching for so long and a really good friend comes along and gives me this...I was in fact SPEECHLESS when I saw this...and I can't thank the person enough....

From my understanding, old-timers like me can jump in to. We just have to think way back to when we first started what our first true wishlist was, right?

I was huge into Sailor Moon way back then when I started collecting cels. All I wanted was one kick ass cel of each main character and I was going to be done cel collecting. :rollin Who knew?! :nuts So when I purchased my first Sailor Moon cel of Sailor Moon, I was in heaven. My very first wishlist cel. 8O I can really see how my tastes have changed. Please excuse the bad pic.

i did not really understand the "wishlist" or "wishlist cel" concept until i created my rs gallery, and thus my first wishlist. my wishlist hasnt really changed since then. i think ive probably added one series and maybe 2 screenshots in the past couple of years. before i joined rs, i had been collecting for at least 2 years.

that said, the first cels i ever purchased were probably "wishlist" because i had always wanted them. here are those cels.:

I'm technically not a newbie....But since I just started collecting again that makes me somewhat of a newbie :D

This Yugioh group cel was officially my first wishlist cel:

I remember when I first saw it I wanted it so badly and I went crazy when the owner finally decided to sell it.

I think I jumped into this hobby too fast. I've acquired many things that made me OOH and AAAhh. I've acquired things that I just Had to add to my collection. And yet, I've yet to buy something Actually on my wishlist. I've yet to SEE anything actually on my wishlist.

And so, the hunt continues...

I had the scan from the Fushigi Yuugi manga on my wall for nearly 3 years, so when I saw this cel up for trade, I just knew it was a wish even though at the time I didn't have a real wishlist made. Up til then it was mainly a vague I want character x list in my head. Plus at the time I wouldn't have put that image on my list since I wouldn't have thought it remotely possible to ever get it. So yeah, it really was a wish come true. :)

The time he or she would not have put that image on his or her list since he or she would not have thought it remotely possible to ever get it is where it's at.
