Those darned cel siblings! ^_^

Post by Caroline »

this came up in conversation with a friend of mine the other day who collects and i thought it was interesting. we were discussing cel siblings and how sometimes as collectors we all have our greedy/jealous moments about wanting to keep our galleries unique. we spend so much money on cels, i think that's justifiable. okay i admit, sometimes when i see someone post a new cel that is a sequence-mate to something i own it's bittersweet. i love seeing new artwork whether it's a sequence-mate or not, but at the same time i'm thinking "hmm, i kinda liked being the only person with that!" in alot of cases, i've made close friends with collectors who are cel siblings, collectors that i might not have talked to otherwise.

i know it is a little hypocritical. there will always be cels in someone else's collection that you are just dying to have. so when a sequence-mate pops up, it's an amazing moment. this happens to me all the time. anyways, i just want to make clear that this is not a rant and not aimed at anyone in particular. i'd love to know your thoughts on cel siblings!

Only just? Do you have to go to school for that?

Unfortunatly cloud, you do not have to go to school for that.

I do know a few galleries on RS that I have a cel sibling with, unfortunatly, most of them no longer update their gallery or I haven't taked to them yet.

Well thats the beauty of an A1End cel :dgrin

In my case I have never been concerned if someone else was lucky enough to find a sequence mate to one of mine. So long as I have mine thats all that matters.

It doesn't bother me if someone else has a sequence mate to a special cel in my gallery. I'm always happy when people are able to find their wish cels. And the more artwork to look at, the merrier! :D

What does bother him or her if someone else has a sequence mate to a special cel in his or her gallery ?

It's funny because I have always thought of sibling cels and a positive thing. I like it when I come across a sequence mate in someone else's gallery and happy to point it out never thinking the other person might not be as content as I am! LOL. Wonder how many people I've made unhappy?! To me it shows similar tastes in collecting.

Really, when you consider the millions of anime cels out there it is pretty unique to find someone else out there with nearly the same cel. And if you are attracted to the same genre of anime and have the same sort of budget, chances are you will probably end up with similar cels and therefore a similar gallery. That is just the nature of collecting. :)

Well, since I collect mostly CLAMP items... there are many sequence-mates out there. Some galleries so closely resemble mine that it is eerie. But I'm good friends with the owners of said galleries, so I don't mind in the slightest. In fact, it tickles me pink when we all bid against each other on the same items -- talk about artificially inflating prices when we don't really have to! :D

Heh...I've felt the same way too sometimes. Sometimes a lot of cels from the same sequence turn up over the years and I couldn't help but feel a little let down my cel didn't feel quite as special as it once did. It was downgraded from "unique cel" to "just another cel from a long sequence that's easily available for anyone to purchase". :)
in alot of cases, i've made close friends with collectors who are cel siblings, collectors that i might not have talked to otherwise.
That's the one of the benefits that come from them appearing. I have a cel sequence from the same sequence as JWR's Kayuusei TV series eyecatch.
in a way, this is a little hypocritical. there will always be cels in someone else's collection that you are just dying to have. so when a sequence-mate pops up, it's an amazing moment. this happens to me all the time. so let's consider, what would you do if a sibling-cel turned into a sibling-gallery? how would you feel? like you're being stalked, flattered?
I'm not able to relate to this question any more since I can't recall anyone's cel that I would want too badly anymore (not even for sketches since I'm somewhat winding down on my collecting hobby). I haven't had much interest in cels for the past couple of years.

But I can relate to this question somewhat in terms of Tsukihime sketches. Tsukihime is an old computer colored series that has had a lot of material from it available for quite some time often for relatively low prices so I feel comfortable discussing this sketch series openly. Sketch series are more problematic to display and discuss publicly because there's a higher risk of getting suppliers into trouble (or from resellers because there may only be a handful of auctions for the series).

For awhile I thought it was kind of neat that I had the only Tsukihime sketches that I had ever seen available for sale (THAT I KNOW OF during the time I was looking for them and from the limited ways that I was looking for them). It was almost two and a half years before I seen any other sketches from it.

I admit to feeling a certain aura from items from less commonly available series. It makes the pieces feel special in comparison to the series that have had dozens upon dozens of auctions for them.

Anyone ever seen a cel from "Sequence"? Those have got to be rare.

The only time it has ever bothered me was when I know I paid much higher than the sequence mate. But that only lasts for a day or two and is mostly geared at my unfortunate luck for that cel. Usually, I love finding sequence mates in galleries! Some of my best cel friends and I share a lot of favorite characters so we're always trying to collect sequence mates. I think it's a really positive thing. :^^:

I just follow the rule of if I like having it, that's all that matters. I don't judge my collection against anyone else's collection. ex - So what if so and so has 3 sequence mates to my one Inuyasha cel? I love my kick-ass Inuyasha cel! :D

I tend to agree with Duo, only what makes it even more
frustrating, is when you fight it out with another collector
for a cel, you end up winning and paying through the nose,
and then a sequence mate shows up a couple days later
and the collector who made you pay $500 for yours, gets
thiers for $200. :?

I feel very relieved that there are sequence-mates out there. When I see a wishlist cel in someone elses gallery, I am comforted by the fact that there is probably a sequence mate floating around somewhere for me to find and make my own someday.

Thats whats so amazing about collecting production cels opposed to limited edition cels: multiple people can own pieces of their favorite moments at the same time with each cel still being completely unique!

Just think of how dissaponting cel collecting would be if there was just one of everything!
