Interest in collecting from an anime?

Post by Keropi »

How long do you maintain interest in collecting from an anime?

I've noticed that the more anime I watch the shorter my attention span is for the anime that I've seen. I lose interest in an anime title faster than I did a year or two ago.

When I first began watching anime twelve years ago I liked a lot of the anime I seen. I would have collected from most of them if I earned more money and I would have still felt like collecting from them even a few years after I saw them.

Nowadays I'd only feel like collecting from a several of the shows that I watch every six months because I'm comparing the shows I recently watched to all the other shows I've ever seen. Now even for the shows I recently watched and initially felt like collecting from I could easily lose interest in two to four months after I watched them. :shrug

I still have favorite or top priority anime that I'd like to collect, but the window of collecting interest is shrinking. In a way it's good because I spend less, but it's not so good when it comes to maintaining collecting interest.

How is the situation with you guys? Does your anime title collecting interests always stay the same or does your interests change all the time?

I think as you go on, tastes change.

I have abandoned or sold off many cels from series I used to be interested.

As well, for me personally, I don't really like collecting Gengas and Dougas for the newer animes. Even when I buy them, I find I lose interest in them very fast. I still enjoy a few series, but I find that I do not pursue art from them as aggressively.

I have no idea how to answer this. :? I know my tastes change over time. I've sold off several series that at the beginning I probably would never have dreamed of doing. But then again, when I began collecting I just had to have everything I could get my hands on. I realized later that wasn't the kind of collector I am or want to be.

Now, I collect only cels and sketches that have meaning to me, whether it's a favorite character or favorite scene. A lot of the newer anime I've watched I have no interest in collecting from although I'm not sure why.

So sorry, I guess my only answer is it varies from series to series. :^^:

When I started collecting, I had recently watched Saiyuki, and I really enjoyed it. However, I no longer Love the sketches that I do have from that series so I would sell them all (if any one collected it anymore and would buy what is left of them).

But even though I haven't added any in a long time I would still buy a new cel from Noir if one came up at the right time.

Since I've kept my collection pretty narrow when it comes to the amount of different series I collect from, I don't have as many series that I've lost interest in.

In some ways I suppose it could compared to current English anime release discussions.

Some people want anime releases to come out sooner so that more commercial releases are out before anime fans interest change to other anime.

I find that although I watch a number of different anime, I am still selective about the chara and scenes that I collect from. The anime that I had interest in and have made their way into my collection continue to hold interest, particularly, when that "special" cel or sketch finds its way to a dealer or the open market. In short, I have watched much more than I collect, so I don't think my interest has waned.

Depends on the series, I know there are a lot of series I get really excited about to start with, and then a few weeks later I'll have moved on. Though there are still a few series I've stuck with on the whole, though Yu Yu Hakusho's the only one I can think of that I've stuck with since the beginning.

I'm pretty sure there's no cure for my obsession with FY. :P It's been going for 8 years and still strong.

I'm not interested in collecting sketches other than of the boshi-twins, so I'm pretty safe from all the new anime these days. I've sold off most of my non-FY cels, too, except for my few choice favourites.

What makes you so certain? Has there ever been cure for his or her obsession with FY?

Honestly... Very few new anime holds my interest and the very few ones that do are generally not mainstream but hard to find sketches for. Go figure.

With regards to collecting I have pretty much stuck to those very special to me. There was a time i bought things (not a lot) that I thought was special but have since passed them along and now my gallery is much more leaner and meaner. But for certain I always think twice on what I purchase... And pretty much only certain anime has surpassed the test of time. So the result is a collection that I'm very much in love with!

Ah, yes! :) So true! I've been collecting FY the entire time. I have yet to want to stop. I sold a couple of impulse buys but what remains will most likely remain forever. And if it's a boshi twin . . . well, let's just say I hope to add. :dgrin The same goes for Duo from GW. :dlook

I only collect from one series, reason being is that DB will always be special to me and thus is the only show I could really justify spending high amounts of money to get quality cels from it.

I do watch Trigun and have been tempted to get a nice cel from that but never have. I haven't bought any new DB cels recently because I haven't seen anything I really want. I am hoping I will when the BWA opens tomorrow. :)

I think that whatever series I have cels from are the ones that I honored enough to get art from.
However the series I probably will never add to again would be Akira and Evangelion.. mainly for the fact it is so rare and expensive. I would add Utena to this list but I love it too much to say I'd never get another cel. ;)

I think my collecting interest has become more selective and I tend to buy alot less impulsively now, but with me there are certain shows like NS and Akira that I've always maintained an interest for and subsequently has ensured my continued interest in cel collecting. I do tend also to watch less new anime nowadays, but with that said I have managed to check out the first appleseed movie (did they all look like weird plasticy dolls or was that just me?), which I didn't get on with and Black Lagoon which I did.

So yeah ultimately I do get into new shows, but for me they couldn't replace my collecting interests, which have remained pretty constant.
