Collectibles also have distinctions between the ones that were machine produced and those that were created completely by hand.

While I've enjoyed collecting "allographic" types of collectibles I've found that it's more difficult for me to get excited about having them. I need more of a "soul touching" reason to collect them as compared to the "autographic" types of collectibles.

Collecting old comic books and Confederate currency was fun, but for me they can't compared to owning a Union soldier's handwritten letter to his wife or a hand written letter by a celebrity. I have more interest in production artwork sketches created by strangers than I do to to printed 1867 Hawaiian newspapers or a 1961 Batman comic book that I've had.

I don't see the seduction of paying thousands of dollars for printed copies, but everyone has their own priorities I guess.

Quick guide to collecting:

1. Lay out lots of $$$ to go to an exotic location.

2. Hang out with people of your own kind and preferences.

3. Here: drink this (or, try this funky hand-rolled ciggie ).

4. Feel the warmth. Know the love.

5. Dash down to dealer's room. Look at the pretties!

6. Haul out plastic.

Yes, Keropi, I played with collecting a number of things (still have a bunch of 50s-era baseball cards in fact). But the emotional impact of having not just "a" cel from a given series I liked, but that particular totally unique A1 END moment from that series so trumped anything I'd ever felt before, that I was irretrievably lost the moment I felt it. Even granted that having something with a personal association with Picasso means a lot to some art lovers, I would be uneasy knowing that there are 499-2999 others out there that are exactly the same, even with an authentic signature attached.
