AMV- How to Do questions.

Post by LinaLoN »

I just download Movie Maker from Windows so I can create AMVs but I have no idea what steps I need to do to make them. My first question is how do I get the images from dvds into the program? I can burn CDs with the program "Nero" I have but I don't want to accidently tape over the original dvd or erase it or anything. Also how do you save those to the computer or Movie Maker so you can use the images?

Also, how can you time the music with the images frame by frame? Anything that I might get stuck on if someone could anticipate those questions.

Be aware I am practically computer-illiterate but I can do them if someone tells me exactly what I might see step by step.

I would REALLY appreciate any help on this and I figure there are other members out there would might be interested in making AMVs too. Thanks! :)

You know, it's funny that you asked this because I've been thinking about it lately. I used to make music videos a long time ago. Since I've been watching AMVs on YouTube recently, I've been thinking about making some again.

I always assumed you would dl the raws and take footage from there. I hate when the videos have the subs unless they're there for a reason. The same thing goes with the characters talking.

I know Iwakuralain16 makes AMVs. She's on YouTube too. Maybe she can give you some tips.

When I made mine, I used the AMVapp program that they link to in the AMV.org How To.

It contains DVD Decrypter to get the files off of the DVDs. And Virtual Dub Mod to take the video files and "cut" out clips to edit with.

The rest I did in Premiere (to edit the video), and Audition (to edit the audio).

I purchased these programs on journeyed.com because I take night classes and that web site gives student (and teacher) discounts with proof that you are in school.

I made this over a weekend, and it is far from a good video. So I never loaded it to AMV.org, because I don't want other AMV makers to see what a piece of crap it is.

Wow, this looks like it would be a lot of fun. I'm technically challenged, so I'm not sure if I can figure it out, but I'd really like to try. :D

Thanks for the links and info!

Hmm, there are so many "guides" listed on that website I can't tell which one is better suited for me. 8O It has to be something easy to understand, for the MM2 and has to tell me exactly how to take images from existing dvds, to the computer and into the MM2 program. I don't really have spare time to look through all those. :l

Thanks for the responses. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's just started and has questions.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one over-whelmed by all the guides. I've never had ANY computer courses so I need simple straight forward stuff. I've taught myself everything I know about my computer and the web. (Yes, I'm old enough to remember there not being a www or computers in people's homes. I used my mom's typewriter for term papers. 8O ) When I made my music videos in the past, it was literally with 2 VHS machines side by side and a tape deck. (Where's my cane? :hurt: )

I'll do some more researching. If I find something simple enough, I'll post about it.

Miz ducky, it wasn't crappy. It was cute. :^^:

Not to sound mean, but just to be honest, if you don't have the time to read the How-to guides, then you won't have the time to make a watchable video.
Quality is really easy to see in an AMV. If you don't try to understand what the problems can be then you won't be able to avoid and fix them.

An example, I learned how to make a mask, and use it to cover the lip flaps in multiple portions of my video. You wouldn't know it was there unless you compared it to the original footage. Lip flaps are something that is common in poor quality videos because people don't take the time to fix it.

AMVs are cool, I've made two of them but that was on professional equipment and not on a home PC. However, that was some years ago and I know home PCs have stepped up to take care of digital editing so it shouldn't be too tricky.

This is something I'd like to get back into, it just means having to learn a whole bunch of new software and it that's VERY time-consuming.

Best of luck with your videos, LinaLON and the other guys.
If you want any specific advise on techniques and stuff feel free to ask as I used to be a video editor and my degree at Uni was primarily in Video.

Miz D is right, to make a decent video, you'll need to invest a lot of time into reading at least some of the guides. A lot of it can seem very daunting at first (and to be truthful, after doing it for the last 4.5 years, I still don't understand some aspects of it), but after the first few you stumble through, it starts to become second nature.

However, this shouldn't discourage you in just 'making and learning as you go' either... sometimes experience is a good teacher!

to answer some of questions posed in this thread so far:

1. there really isn't a way to 'tape over' your original DVD's (well, unless you're using copies that are burned to a RW disc). If you're using production DVD's for your source materials, short of breaking them or scratching the surface of them, you can't destroy them by copying the data off of them.

2. www.animemusicvideos.org guides are numerous, but the two I'd suggest are: ErMaC and AbsoluteDestiny's guides to all things audio and video version 2 and VicBond007's Guide to Working with DVD Footage. The rest you can read at your leisure, but those are the main ones.

3. use the best sources you have available - meaning DVD's for video and CD's for audio. You have the most control with these types of sources and they have the most potential for improving quality- and yes, you can improve on DVD quality:

4. sometimes, you HAVE to do things frame by frame :)

5. yes, home computers have made leaps and bounds in the last few years so it's easier for the home video-making enthusiast to do pretty quality work.

and just because Miz D showed hers...
buma's vids :)
