The gallery owner is very nice - I had an e-mail from her today explaining the damage to her cels in further detail. If something like this happened to me...I don't know what I would do. I hope she doesn't mind, but I'd like to share this photo she sent to me with y'all:

For people interested, I'd suggest browsing through her site. It's quite fascinating (once you get past the tragedy) how the cels handled the extreme heat, smoke and flames.

I've been talking with the gallery curators (well, only with one of them, but the cels belonged to two sisters). Very, very sad. :l

Crystal Rose was their original gallery:

EDIT: I just realized that I had read part of the message wrong. Apparently, only about half the cels on their old site were in the house that burned, so I suppose that is something, even if it is a small consolation.

Yeah I browsed the entire thing, it's really sad to see all those nice cels damaged. I feel for the owners and I'm glad they still chose to show them. /sob

My heart goes out to them as well. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to see any part of your collection like that.

Yea I saw their gallery and was litterally speachless. One of the biggest fears for cel collectors happens :( . Browsing through the Utena section was just :l .

When our house was struck by lightning, I actually thought about grabbing two certain cel books on the way out -- but went for the cat instead. It does bring home just how transient any possession is, especially one-of-a-kind items like animation art. (I thought after things settled down about family photos and memorabilia that could have gone up as well.)

The cels are a sad loss -- but I'm sure that's only one side of a heartbreaking, stressful personal disaster. Thankfully, from what I understand, neither sister was hurt.

It's terrible that they lost their cels and other possessions in the fire. I feel for them. It must be a very stressful time. :hurt: I'm glad that no one was hurt.

I feel so bad for the two impacted by this. I can't imagine how I would feel if something like that happened to me, though I have fears about this kind of thing every time I leave for more than a couple of days. I'm glad that they are okay, and that not everything was lost.
