My thoughts exactly. In fact, look at the comments in the video. "Awww, now I want a lion." The lion was released onto a protected African reserve, not (technically) in the wild. It had continuous contact with humans while on the reserve. And it was not the head of the pride, but a member of the pride. I am sick of people messing with nature and treating it like it is their own personal playground. While I admire the fact that they saved the lion, this video sends out a mixed message. And come on, Whitney Houston?Drac of the Sharp Smiles wrote:However, the video also hits on one of my other big peeves... Things that make people want to go out and try to keep animals that are not intended to be kept as pets. There are too many very dangerous animals like lions, tigers, deer, binturong ("bear cats"), etc that are being kept by people who are NOT knowledgeable enough about the animals to be keeping them. These people keep them in inadequate housing, feed them inadequate diets and, in the end, are unable to provide the animal with the interaction every animal needs because they can't get close to it -- interaction it would get in the wild with others of it's own kind. At the same time, they have ensured the animal has not learned what it needs to survive in the wild, so it can't go back there. (The video here doesn't mention that the owners of this lion apparently spent a long time teaching it a lot of survival techniques.... they did NOT just go set it free in the middle of Africa. Had they done that, it would have undoubtably died and not become a productive member of a lion pride.)
Time is but an illusion. Lunch time...doubly so.

You're reading waaaay too much into the video...blueheaven wrote:I am sick of people messing with nature and treating it like it is their own personal playground. While I admire the fact that they saved the lion, this video sends out a mixed message.

They saved a baby lion and brought it back to africa...

People won't go out and buy lions because of this video... that's as absurd as saying video games and movies make people go out and kill people.

That was cute.
Seriously, though, I don't think the point of the video was for people to go get dangerous animals. It was more like: if fierce animals can remember the ones they love, why can't humans? But any time you show wild animals as friendly, you risk putting out the wrong idea.
I still think it was cute, though.

Someone who is stupid enough to go get one . . . probably deserves to get hurt.blueheaven wrote:In fact, look at the comments in the video. "Awww, now I want a lion."

Why now? You want only one?

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I concur I think this particualr video on the whole sends out a positive message vis a vis animal conservation, which really we're going to have to do alot more of in the future as we seem so intent on annihilating their habitat.
As far as keeping them as pets goes, need we remember the almost inevitiable comupance of one half of the eponimous duo that was Siegfried and Roy? Youch...

My friend in Florida has a lynx for a pet (much smaller, not so domesticated animal).
The law says that he had to have a lot of land to live on in order to keep the cat. Lucky for him his family happened to have some land, and he was able to get permission to build a house on it. So the cat stayed.
I guess she plays "Mom" to house cats. She sleeps in his bed (and sometimes on his Head) while he's a sleep, and wakes him up with a "bath". Sometimes his face breaks out if the "bath" takes too long.
... no wonder he's still single...

You don't have to worry about "Baths"
