My in-laws are strange - I don't understand them They pucsh me down with one hand and pull me up with the other.

They, in their own kind (but ignorant since they don't know how much it's worth) way, have offered to pay me back for my cels! They can do it too. However, I am going to need to get them appraised. Anyone know about appraisers?

I obviously think my cels are worth more than the sum of their materials. I also collect stamps and most people think that they are just sticky paper. It takes all kinds. :)

ive always wondered about appraisals myself if t here was anyone or any site out there that could do that.

i know people just dont pick numbers from out of the sky when it comes to pricing them when they want to sell them.

so how does one figure out how much a cel is worth?

(also for insurance pourposes? do you have to have the original reciept of how much you paid for it originally? ).

glad your inlaws are finally stepping up to the plate, Jen!

i hope you get more than you can ask or think from them! :D
good luck!
(i know its all a pain right now but just think of the nice cel shopping spree youll have when you get your money from the in-laws! ;D) lol

Appraisals can cost alot. Image

So you could just go on Ebay and YJ and print out costs of similar cels or save your reciepts. print out paypal slips etc.

It's true that I have notes of many cel cots. The book itself was burned (I found a couple of charred remains) but I have the computer file. However, cel prices seem to keep going up (at least with inflation). I estimate that some of the good portrait cels of Inuyasha has gone up over 400% in cost.

For example, this cel
http://inferno.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=247514
cost $60 (Inuyasha was still coming out, pre-CG) lots of years ago. Now what would you estimate it costs? It fills most of the cel and it's a beautiful close-up. Based on similar cels on YJ today, I would guess $200?

I think it will be hard unless really similar cels show up on ebay, YJ, and in online shops. You all are welcome to send me links and pdfs of such things to help me price them. :)

I checked out that forum link - thanks!

The only problem with using receipts is that I kept them in a cel box and they got burned up - I found bits of them here and there. That, and they are out-of date.

Before I do anything, I have to finish posting on rubberslug, which everyone agrees is a good idea. Some of my only records of my burned cels are on crystalrose at rubberslug since I can't find all of my files.

Try contacting Backlot animation. He might have some advice for you.
I know there is a professional restoration place out there that does restoration and appraisals...

First off, I want to repeat to Kero how very sorry I am to read about what happened. I can't even imagine what it must be like to loose even part of such a beautiful collection so suddenly and unexpectedly.

As far as the current discussion goes, I have often wondered about where to have appraisals done. Maybe a long standing dealer would be able to give a rough idea from the portion you have scans for. After all, they are in the business of selling them and would have to be up to date on the current market for artwork from most major shows. It would be reasonable to pay them for the work but I have no idea what that would be.

I guess the rest of us should take this as a lesson to keep up with scanning/photographing our artwork - even the stuff we never intend to post online.

I know that Norton and a few other companies offer secure backup storage space (for a fee) which would be a nice way to keep those scans and possibly spending/receipt records in another location. An less secure (but cheaper) alternative for those of us with own websites would be to store the scans/receipts on any extra space we have there. I have no idea if you could do the same with the private areas on rubberslug or if it would be allowed since collectively that would eat up a lot of space.

I had wondered this myself. Do you think Nichibei Anime Club or some other might do it? It's true that I don't need an official "appraiser", but my mother-in-law would accept the pronouncement of a dealer. I have not really been in the cel collecting loop for a couple of years (it's good to be back but for an oh so sad reason) so I don't remember all of my old haunts. Well, except I do miss Anime-Taro. :)

I just went to anime-link and checked out their cels. I have a cute little cel from Utena
http://inferno.rubberslug.com/gallery/i ... mID=247918
They have one too from the same sequence:
http://anime-link.com/utena/
I did NOT pay $300 for mine. I guess cel prices have really shot up.
I know it is a color copy, but is that a matching background with their cel?

I just wrote anime-link about doing an estimate and to see if they even do estimates. We'll see what happens.

Well, it depends on the series, dealer, and day of the week (at least, it feels that way sometimes!). Some series have probably gone down in price. For example, lately, Escaflowne cels have been going for less at auction. Of course, there haven't been many quality cels for Esca lately, either.

Anime-link tends to be one of the more expensive dealers. You could try Nichibei as well. Of course, it may take a little time, since we're still in con season.

Hope you get everything worked out! *hugs* That's sad that it wasn't the Escaflowne book that you found. :( At least you managed to save some genga!

Yeah, Anime Link has been around for a long time. If Rick can't do it, a couple of others that have been selling for many years are Asylum Anime and Anime Ed.

Usually appraisals are done before a fire.

Image You can't do an appraisal on a picture alone.

You have to see the cel or sketch and the condition it's in / (Line fading, paint chips... etc.)

I hope someone can help!
