Pom Poko

Post by MDKiller1 »

Hello All

I have a question...

So my husband and I sat down and started to watch Pom Poko. I think we had it on for maybe 10-15 mins..and when the raccons started to run to eachother to fight and transformed I had to turn it off. I thought it was so stupid. I couldnt get into it at all. Which is really weird because I love all the Studio Ghibli stuff.

So my question is...Does the movie get any better. Because if the animation stays looking like it did when the raccons transformed and got their armor. I think its one movie I wont beable to watch :(

Let me know :)

Thanks again
Dee

Before saying the transformation is stupid, please read about it and understand it is something big in Japanese culture. It took Isao Takahata many years to complete this movie, the least you can do is judge it after watching more than 10 minutes of it.

Olivier, Dee is not a newbie or something. She does know about anime, and I think it is foolish of you to assume she doesn't. Have you seen her gallery? I don't think she has an issue with transformation scenes  . It isn't ignorance to call a transformation stupid, no matter how sacred they may be to a culture. Some transformation scenes are downright stupid looking. Like anything, there are good anme and bad anime. All she wants to know is if this anime is any good. So please, take it easy.

To answer your question, yes. I think you should stick this one out until the end. It is VERY silly at points, but it does make a point.

Most of the movie is not about tanuki turning into samurai and fighting, so i would suggest getting past that part and seeing if you like the more environmental conservation, species change/survival part.

"This blanket that you're sitting on is actually......" LOL

I liked Pom Poko and I think it has a REALLY important environmental message. There were some things about it that I think will prevent it from being considered the best of the best in anime, but I think it's worth watching.

If it's just about it "looking stupid", I suggest you give it more of a chance. However, I admit there are two anime I've not watched simply because I dislike the animation style enough that it makes it impossible for me to enjoy the anime -- much in the same way that I can't enjoy a book written in a style that I don't feel reads well. So, obviously, your milage may vary. ^_^

"Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat, Bullwinkle..."

Yeah, I'll admit that I could have done without so many nutsack transformations as well. I think that that's what made the movie less enjoyable for me. It seemed that the technique was just overused. The animation didn't bother me, but it definetely wasn't a style I'd try to emulate.

The message of the movie was a good one and shows what animals do to survive in this modern world. The story moves at a comfortable pace, despite the fact that the story unfolds over several years. I'd say, see it once, and then you probably won't need to see it again.

But, it's my least favorite Ghibli film.

Hello all

Thanks for all the information. An believe me im not one that hates transformation scenes....since I did collect alot of them from the series I do collect cels from.

It was mostly the animation that got me. How it looked so great one moment then changed and looked like something id see on Nick Jr...lol not that I have a problem with that because my son watches it. Its just not like Ghibli to me. An made me say "holy moly"

Ill sit down someday I think and try to watch it. But like Drac said there are just somethings that you see and cant watch.

Also thanks blueheaven for sticking up for me while I was away :)

Where did I write that she didn't know about anime? Nowhere. I just meant that she didn't know about THIS particular anime - having not watched it.
Besides, knowing about an anime is not related to one's cel gallery. An example that is quite relevant to this topic: I happen to own a cel of Pompoko, that Isao Takahata signed right in front of my eyes; but at the time I hadn't watched Pompoko yet - I am just glad he didn't ask me whether I had liked it or not ;)

I don't want to start an argument here. I am sorry if my post seemed rude. This was not my intention. However, I stand by my position. I would never stop watching a movie after just 10 minutes, most certainly if it was a movie made by Isao Takahata. If I have a doubt and I really want to have somebody else's opinion about a movie, I may read a review on the internet - there are plenty of them, written by professionals. Moreover, I think anybody's sensitivity is different, therefore asking for an opinion when it comes to art is useless. I may love a movie that you will find dull. I want to tell Dee that she should make her own judgment on this movie by giving it a fair chance. If she reads what the others think about Pompoko before watching it, her judgment will be flawed from the start.
