a wierd idea for displaying cels...

For the n00bs of cel collecting and production art . . . and for some of us old-timers, too. Post your questions on anything that puzzles you.

a wierd idea for displaying cels...

Post by Belldandy16 »

Hi guys!
Because this is my last day of work before my vacation and i have nothing do so im sitting here thinking and thinking and thinking...

i thought of a wierd idea for displaying my cels (the lesser expensive ones, i mean)...
what about a scrapbook?
ive done scrapbooking before and i know all of the things that are used for scrapbooking are completely archival safe (plastic and paper both).

how i was thinking of doing it was, illl just have the "background" with some information on it in the corner of the page about the cel.
Ill keep the cel in its protective plastic and with archival double sided tape id put the cel (tape the cel bag- not the cel itself) ounto the background, then put some kind of archival safe stiff backing behind the background (so the cel doesnt flop around)... so itll be something alittle more interesting to look at instead of the boaring black background of the itoyas.

any archival experts out there? do you think it might be okay to do that? all i was worried about was the colored ink on the "background" paper might do something to the cel (even though the cel will still be in the bag, i was just conerned).

its just something interesting to do so i can enjoy my collection more. :)

oh this is the paper id be using for the "backgrounds"
http://store.scrapbook.com/dwv-ps-5-13.html

any thoughts? do you think that'd be cool or should i just stick to keeping them in the itoya portfolio's (im going to keep my most expensive cels in the itoyas)..
hmmmm. /hmm

thanks guys! :)

I really think you should enjoy your cels however you like them! Image What's the use of having cels if you don't enjoy them!

Maybe the backgrounds could give off bad gases that could harm your cels... so maybe you should air them out once in a while... Every few months? Image

I do something similar with my cels, backing them with good-quality art paper that coordinates with the paint colors. One of my favorite brands is Canson Mi-Teintes Drawing Paper, which comes in a variety of colors, is widely available by the sheet (19 x 24 inches) at Michaels and other art stores, and has a nice "tooth" that looks good behind the cel and accents what I like to call its "thingness." (That's my snobby term for a scan that makes it clear that the cel is a physical object in my possession, rather than a really really good screen capture.)

Here's one of my cels with a Mi-Tientes background:

But I also like to get other kinds of scrapbooking paper for a slightly more dramatic effect. I really like the way this Miyu cel goes with this piece of scrapbooking paper:

As I said in the description, when I tried this sheet behind the cel, Miyu seemed to smile a little bit. I've often seen cels seem to change expression slightly when just the right color or color combination is put behind them. It used to creep me out a little, but now I'm used to it.

And sometimes I like to do something just a little outrageous. While this one looks ominous, in fact the backing paper is lignin-free and archival:

Obviously, I don't store the paper inside the cel bag, or in time the paint would stick to it. But it adds another level of adventure to getting, scanning, and installing new cels, and I think in the end it makes them more enjoyable to view as opposed to the back of the sketch, the black paper in the Itoya sleeve, or the inside of the scanner lid.

Recently, I purchased several B4 size binders at Daiso to organize my backgrounds and sketches. The binders either have 10 pages or 20, and each page is made of polypropelene(same stuff that most cel bags are made of). Daiso is a Japanese "dollar store" and most items are $1.50 and up.

As the store only had a few, I asked if they could possibly order some in the B4 and A3 sizes. They mentioned that since the items had not been discountinued that they'd be able to restock some more.

If you'd like, the next time I head over, I can pick some up for you.

As for backgrounds for cels, I hunt around for mine on YJ. Patience definetely is the key, though, because the main background seller on YJ tends to have a variety of backgrounds every other week or so. Most BG auctions end cheaply, so it might be something to consider. Plus, you can scan them up in the RS gallery and share with others as well.

exactly! i was getting kinda boared with the black background (and plus i have all my cels in a 11x14 itoya - i used to collect comic book artwork and had some extra space when i stopped collecting so i just put all my cels in there... man its a pain trying to get them out to enjoy them (because that book is so heavy).
