please help me sleep

Post by HotIce »

So here's the story... I've probably gotten 1-3hrs of sleep a night for the last, god only knows how long. Last time I got more sleep was 2 weeks ago, and I had to take some Equate sleep pills to do so, which was a surprise b/c they normally don't work for me. I'm sure some of you are thinking that 3hrs a night is plenty, or thats how much you always get or... whatever, but my body just doesn't function well on such little amount of sleep, and after so long, by body and mind is just slow moving, and blah... I'm miserable.

I've tried: reading, watching tv/movies, listening to soft music, listening to hard rock music, counting, telling myself to breathe in and out, exercise, showers, baths, fans on/off, even gone to my family doctor and gotten prescriptions to help... all with no luck. I don't have a man so sex is out of the question... and I do -not- want to come to rely on pills/medication.

Soooooo... I'm asking what people here do to help them fall asleep.

Melatonin

I've been taking it for a year now and I have never had more restful sleep. It's available over the counter in most health food stores and there are no side effects.

What happened to it?

I take Melatonin (3 mg) tablets 30-45 minutes before going to sleep if I have don't have to wake up early the next day.

If I DO have to wake up early I don't take it the night before or I'll be in some danger of oversleeping. This is because I normally don't much sleep to begin with (on a workday about 4 1/2 hours)

Melatonin helps for other things besides sleeping so that's why I take it.

EDIT:

Opp....Birdie answered already. :D

You might share your issues with a MD. I had a persistent problem with feeling very drowsy during the day but not feeling like I got any relief from sleep. Eventually I went to a sleep lab and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Now I wear a scary mask over my face every night (which has the nice side effect of keeping bad dreams away for the most part) and feel much better during the day.

Was sleep lab and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea a good experience?

I agree with sensei. Have a professional do a sleep study on you to see what the problem might be.

For me, I take a supplement called DMAE. I find that it does the trick. It gives me wicked cool dreams as well.

Some folks cannot sleep because their mind is racing before bedtime. Try not watching TV at least an hour before bed. Read a magazine. Take a walk. Drink some chamomille tea. Allow your mind to slow down so it can prepare for sleep.
Time is but an illusion. Lunch time...doubly so.

Try listening to stand-up comedy. I have sleeping problems too and before my ipod broke, I use to listen to good ol' George Carlin and Id fall asleep since my mind was fixtated on listening to what he said.

But, now Im without an ipod so whenever I go to bed i find that my brain wont shut up :P lol
