It's not required. It's just if you want to. I mean, they are the character you're nominating so I would assume you'd want them to win.

Of course you are right, but it feels like a lot of responsibility . Especially when I’m sure the character himself would disapprove…

After all Illumi Zaoldyeck’s maxim is:

The eldest child in a family of five brothers, Illumi is, like many first-born, the “dutiful son” in following his parents’ wishes. He is also very protective of his family, which is, unfortunately, a world famous clan of professional killers!


When he is sent by his mother to retrieve his runaway younger brother, he mentally browbeats him into acquiescence, separating him from his new friends,
and putting an end (temporarily) to his hope for a more normal life.

But…Illumi doesn’t know he’s the bad guy! He doesn’t even realize the hypocrisy of his “Assassins don’t need friends” speech, even though we’ve seen him trailing after Hisoka for several previous chapters.

There’s a poignant sad wistfulness to this self-deluded character. More so in that, unlike his younger brother, Killua, who has a wonderful friend in Gon, Hisoka is only interested in those who are very strong who will challenge and fight against him. Illumi has his own odd moral code, openly mocked at one point by Hisoka, and even when goaded, Illumi won’t fight him…(Illumi doesn’t make a move against Gon,
even after Gon breaks his arm, until Gon threatens to take Killua from his family!)


A shining example of how a great manga-ka makes all his characters come to vibrant life!




It’s fascinating to me that Yuri-chan’s list and mine are like photographic opposites! Silver and towheads / raven locks!

I thought I could hold out ‘til the end, but I’m gonna cave and use the first of my seconds for Ichimaru Gin. I can’t imagine a scenario where he wouldn’t make my cut.

Unfortunately, I seen more anime than I've read manga, and I don't really want the anime to influence my vote . . .

My love for Hotaru actually came in reading the manga that came after the anime, Yotsuba doesn't have an animated version (to my knowledge), I read Maison Ikkoku years ago and am just now watching the anime, and I started bumming off my roommate's copies of VK months before the anime came out. I should probably watch that one . . .
