chineese books online?

Post by Belldandy16 »

Hi everyone!
hoping you can help me out again with something.

as some of you know, i work for an elementary school library.
Well, we got a new student in fresh from China (poor kid, he cant speak one word of english). Me and this other boy that speaks alittle chineese tried to help him find a book to just look at in our library but he doesnt want to look at anything (i dont know maybe its because he's so uncomfortable there since its all new to him or something).

well i was wondering if any of you know of some comic books or something online thats written in chineese that i could print off at our library ( they wont let us buy any books written in chineese... heck we can barely get the american kids to read english).

so… anyone know of something online i could print off for him?

he was looking at some of our Bone books ("Bone" is a comic book like book) so i thought maybe if someone knows any comics online i could print off... rated "G" of course. :D

thanks so much you guys!!!!!

I dunno, but I think that the best thing for the kid is to be in an English only environment. The best way to learn any language is to be immersed in it, and giving him literature in Chinese won't help him learn English. He might try to use it as a crutch and gravitate only towards the Chinese books because everyone else doesn't speak his language. This is a big problem in California; Everything is centered on other languages that those that immigrate here have no incentive to learn English. I deal with people who have lived here for over 20 years and they still can not tell me what kind of food they're bringing into the United States.

Kids tend to pick up language quickly because they have the hardware to do so, at least until puberty. So, while communication will be difficult the first few weeks for this child, eventually, he'll pick up words while playing with the other kids. I bet that by the end of the year with a total immersion environment that he'll sound like the rest of the class.

pokemon would be awesome if you can find it! i know we have pokemon books here. i could maybe give him one of the chineese pokemon book and an english pokemon book. maybe that would get him interested.

i cant ask him what he likes because he doesnt speak any english. :(

great point, Bunny!
i think ill just print off one book (just to make him feel alittle more comfortable) and thats it.
kids do learn faster than adults and hopefully he will catch on quick.

thanks again guys!!! :ghug:
