Yes, please feel free to keep track for yourself and call me on mistakes. I'm human and miss things too. I'm keeping everything out in the open so everyone can see how the voting goes, etc. The only thing I'm keeping quiet about is how many votes you get each round because it really does depend on the voting. BLEACH’s Soul Society arc is a rescue story, with the hero pitted against a class stratified, unresponsive political system.

But you can’t cross swords with a system!

Some character has to play stand-in for that antagonist.
In some manga you’d get a stock Javert retread ,

but with Tite Kubo we get Kuchiki Byakuya!

From his first appearance, when his subordinate, Renji, is mortified that Byakuya had to intervene when he was overmatched by Ichigo, instead of the typical, ‘you are too weak’ leacture, as Renji’s “face saver” Byakuya tells him he doesn’t want his own skills to get rusty…

Then…he leaves Ichigo (whom he recognizes as being like someone else important to Rukia)…alive!



But even though we’ve been put on notice that there is something more to this man, Byakuya’s got a job to do in this plot, brutally suppressing those trying to free his own sister,
and mercilessly upholding the Rule of Law…


Until he has an epiphany of sorts,

in his last fight with the hero…

then takes a hit meant for the heroine.

And at last we are made privy to what has motivated him. How he had broken the Rules himself…twice, and then made, on his parents’ grave,
a terrible vow!


So all this time, under a mien of icy inflexibility, he has been suffering in his own personal hell. A hell that was,
in the best literary tradition, entirely of his own making!

Brittlely beautiful, with a posture so erect he looks as if he’d break before he’d bend, his character design is perfect.

Even his kenseikan, symbol of his class and status,
which rigidly, purposly places his hair, not back and away from, but rather, right in front of his eyes!

Byakuya strives to be the calm, perfect personification of an aristocratic automaton… But we’ve glimpsed in recent issues
the rash little hellion Yoruichi previously hinted at.

So it would seem that his pride must constantly fight against his own nature!
