Never Would Have Guessed To See This Copyright Infringement!

Post by Ms. Poe »

Soooo...I was at my local pet store to pick up a dog bone for my best friend...When I just decided to walk down the toy isle. Now...I didn't even need to go down it on my way out, but now I know it must have been fate. I strolled along passing over all the squeakies and tug toys when something caught my eye...

"No way...!" I said to myself.

I grabbed it and looked it over...Looking for the Ghibli tag, or any type of Ghibli endorsement...There was none. I was very taken aback, and had to buy one as proof if pics didn't exist on the internet. So, I'm here now looking for opinions. I'm very upset at one of my all-time beloved idols being stolen without any credit to his maker...

So....I ask...What's everyone's opinion on:

I plan on writing a letter to the company this evening, and sending a link to Ghibli as well...

Yeah. Uh, that's not blatant or anything. Can you say, "lawsuit?"

Gah. And turning it into a dog toy, of all things. I don't want to see a Totoro being ripped in half by some rowdy pooch...

Back around 1995 I was at a local Big Lots store with my younger brother. They had a claw machine in the lobby that contained, to my surprise, Totoro plushies. My little brother managed to win one for me and the tag on it didn't have anything mentioning Ghibli or Totoro. I'll have to see if I still have the plush stored away with my other plushies.

wow..that is very strange...It does seem wrong and terrible to make totoro a dog toy, especially with no consent from Ghibli or Disney... *though I bet my doggy would love it :P *
This world is not beautiful ~ therefore it is.

You don't hear that sentiment very often.

2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

Here's the e-mail I got back from them:

"Thank you for the email.

However, I can assure you that in no way did we or were we aware of the Totoro image that you have referenced in you email.

We create our own unique designs and take great pride in providing unique great products.

I understand your concern, but can assure you that we did not in any way copy the character of you concern.

Tim"

Suuuuuure. You weren't aware of them, probably....But now that you are...What's the plan -_-???

LMAO!
:hitting: :crackup
If that is not a cheesy flea market rip-off
I dunno what is! O.O

Ugh!
My only guess for their short defensive reply back
is that they are mortified and caught off guard that
a customer would actually catch this and email them with
a demand for an explanation as to the similarities. :P
Theres a very good likelihood one of their designers
used totoro as reference and the art director/p.a. had
no idea or knowledge about it.

One thing I can say for sure is that quality control
these days are practically non-existent LOL!
:hitting: :rollin

Way to go Poe! :hello
your my hero.
:bow :yourock:

Keep us updated on the happenings!
Im super curious on what the Ghibli folks say...

huh.....
Are you saying he looks like totoro??

Well I could see how you would feel that, but I think it's just by coincidence....
The only thing in common is the: eye type, that they have fat arms and ears and that they are fat. It doesn't even have a : tail, whiskers, feet, stuff on the belly..
It looks more like mickey...with it's ears and snout....

If you want to say Blatant copyright knock off see this:

They stole the pick, it's the one where he holds the explosives, and they just gave him a heads up....

I found one at a local store and bought it....XD

Those juices have been around for a long time. The local asian market where I go to always has a bunch of them in stock, but I try to stay away from goods produced in China or Taiwan due to the relaxed quality control standards. My guess is that if the people at Bandai really cared about it, they would have prosecuted it by now.

Goods from Taiwan and China are notorious for taking US and Japanese characters and just modifying them to fit their products. I've seen some horrible renditions of Mickey Mouse plastered to Chinese childrens' textbooks. Also, around the Lunar New Year, you'll see lots of red envelopes with various characters on them. I have a few with Cardcaptor Sakura, Winnie the Pooh, etc.

Here's one I found online with Doreamon:
